I have leaves growing out of a cork log

Post by Nate the great » Thu Aug 18, 2016 10:22 pm

For the longest time I've wanted to have plastic plants in the crabitat without the stems. My crabs keep grabbing a stem and knocking a plant upside down. (I don't like suction cups.)

A couple days ago I came up with the idea of drilling holes into the cork logs and inserting the leaves in the hole. Check out my first attempt:

After: (one, two, three)

I don't know if anyone has done this before, but I like what I am seeing so far.

I'd be happy to post more details if anyone is interested.

Looks interesting... I wonder how good the crabs are are removing the leaves from the holes? Do you drill all the way through and insert the leaves or do you just drill in partially? Do you use anything to get them to stay in place - glue?

In some cases I drill all the way through. But some of the holes are angled in such a way that it's not possible.

I'm not using glue, yet. This was just a first test. I could add glue, though.

That's a really good idea, Nate! I'm too lazy to do the whole drilling bit so I just turned a cork round on end and inserted two batches of cloth flowers so that the tips of the stems are in the substrate. The crabs really like it as they not only climb around the outside, they hide in the flowers and even go inside the round to sleep!

Here's a few photos of my second attempt. I put the leaves a lot closer together.

one
two
three
four
five

In case anyone is wondering, I got the leaves from plants which had already fallen apart. They were in my trash box when I salvaged them.

I like how this looks, but I have learned that this trick doesn't work with all types of the plastic plants. The plants based on vines look the best, I think.

And for my next attempt I will try to add a few plants to the crevices on this tree:
six
