I recently got a grass hut for all three of my PPs to seek shelter in. They can climb on it easily and they love the darkness it provides, but I fear it may hold in moisture too much and may even mold. I surface cleaned last night when I changed food and water and found a little on the substrate under it and it seems like it has retained some moisture. Should I continue using it or look into another shelter for them?

Grass hut mold?
Re: Grass hut mold?
Most natural fiber and wood items will tend to mold due to the moisture in the crabitat. Mold will not harm the crabs and can just be cleaned off with a paper towel. Wood can be treated to prevent (or at least slow down) the growth of mold by soaking it in SW and then either sun-drying it or baking it in a 250 degree oven for an hour or two until it's dry. I'm pretty sure I know the grass hut you're talking about as I've had them for my mice over the years. The SW soak and sun-drying method would work for the hut but I wouldn't chance drying it in the oven.

Lol no, no oven drying for this! Sun dry and soak will be done! Thank you so much! I was worried it was a lost cause to try and save it!Crabinski wrote:Most natural fiber and wood items will tend to mold due to the moisture in the crabitat. Re: Grass hut mold?
Sooo helpful - thanks for both question & answer! (I have wicked mould allergies, and hadn't even thought of this problem yet!))
