They aren't NECESSARY but do offer some help when a boost of humidity or extra space is needed. Find a plastic shower caddy (Walmart, dollar stores, etc) that attaches with suction cups, get some moss (check the lists on this site for specifics) and have a way for the crabs to get in and out (cholla wood, fishing net, etc.). Soak (wet but not dropping) the moss with dechlorinated water and put in caddy.

You can see my moss pit on the left. I have a net for them to get up to it.

I just took an empty sand switch tupper ware flipped.it upside down took some mesh canvas and put the moss in a soap dish and put it on top now they have a mini upper level to climb as well as an up high moss pit. Doesn't look high tech or fancy but they really enjoy climbing it and having fun in the high moss.pit. Soon im. Going to swap this for a shower kaddy and attach a net for them to climb in. But for now this works

You could also make a below sub moss pit. We took a wide glass vase, silicone glued little shells along one side, have it going down into the sub at an angle and added some moss in there :) . For our 20 g tank, I took an old Tupperware, poked a couple of holes on 2 sides for suction cups and Also several holes on the bottom just for hermie poop to fall into sub ( less cleaning for me! Lol) and put a whole bunch of moss in there too.

I have 2, they love their moss! One is a reptile hammock with suction cups and cholla to climb to it. The other is a locker shelf with a plastic needlepoint sheet zip tied to it covered with moss. I have long chollas and vines going to that one.
