Re: Conflicts of information need some help here
Btw some of the girls on hco are younger than me I'm 35 i doubt they have been doing it since the 90s at least the admins of that group. I asked here because it seems there is more experience here and i just wanted a clear answer on mixing sub with Marine salt which the care guide.here suggests to do.

1. My comment said that the HCA and LHC have been around since the 90's.isadoraisacat wrote:Btw some of the girls on hco are younger than me I'm 35 i doubt they have been doing it since the 90s at least the admins of that group. 2. It is very ageist and inappropriate to assume someone's experience based on your assumptions of how old they are. There are teenagers here with several years of experience, more than I have. I value their input.
3. Upholding and enforcing HCA rules is not a personal attack on anyone, it is my job as an admin. I work with HCO on adoptions and research and it is out of respect and goodwill that I honor their wishes about posting content from their group.
4. THERE IS NO ONE TRUE WAY TO CARE FOR HERMIT CRABS.
I understand @isadoraisacat that it is a possibility that doing everything to the letter is important to you and I know you want to care for your crabs as best you can.
However it seems like members here are constantly having to reiterate that some people may choose to use one method while another uses a different one. And that is okay.
Many of us use salt water to moisten our sub. Mine is. If I never add salt water to it, the salt content is not going to increase. The only worry you would have is buildup near the salt water pool if you have bubblers and a lot of overspray.
For what it's worth, in 2, going on 3 years with my crabs, I have never had an injury due to salt burns.

Anyhow should i worry about my salt poor bubbler making to much salt around the dish because i do get a lot of condensation ? Should i switch my bubbler to just fresh water ?

Re: Conflicts of information need some help here
I am like you, very new to this. I was also very confused with conflicting information found online. I did find that most seemed to agree that MSW in the substrate wasn't harmful to the crabs and could even have benefits. I also took into consideration their natural environment. If a little saltwater in their substrate was harmful to them the whole species would be in a lot of trouble, I also assume that when they do adjust the salinity of their shell water, they have millions of years of instinct to get it right themselves.
I know that someone here once set up a tank with different substrates to see which the crabs preferred, (sand vs ee vs mix). Has anyone done a MSW vs FW substrate test?
The folks here have a lot of experience and are always helpful. I trust their knowledge and am grateful their willingness to share it freely.

Re: Conflicts of information need some help here
My first tank set up i used fresh water not Marine salt water i had a bloom and major mold issues i quickly with in the first hour of catching bought a brand new tank and re did it all with Marine salt water and some hcp pre mixed sub and extra ee and never had mold.since. I'm trying to use common sense and best judgement taking bits and pieces of info to try to come up with the best way to keep the crabitat going that safe and beneficial to the crabs.Brian_T wrote:I am like you, very new to this. I mix msw with my substrate 5:1 play sand and EE i have never needed to must my humidity is 90% and sand castle consistancy I've never had mold on anything but my fresh fruits and veggies and I personally remove the good out the next morning as it's usually covered in white mold and my husband works as a mold and water damage manager and we have a 2 year old and 4 year old so with small children I remove it but to each there own. I know the crabbies are happy there's usually only 1-2 up at a time there always burried so they must be happy [WHITE SMILING FACE]

Yeah just a conflict when another group is basically telling you what your doing is wrong :/ but I'm now going by common sense and MY best judgment for now on.HermiesIsMine wrote:I mix msw with my substrate 5:1 play sand and EE i have never needed to must my humidity is 90% and sand castle consistancy I've never had mold on anything but my fresh fruits and veggies and I personally remove the good out the next morning as it's usually covered in white mold and my husband works as a mold and water damage manager and we have a 2 year old and 4 year old so with small children I remove it but to each there own. That's all you can do @isadoraisacat. I like to try and research their environment in the wild and where they have been observed travelling, etc.isadoraisacat wrote:Yeah just a conflict when another group is basically telling you what your doing is wrong :/ but I'm now going by common sense and MY best judgment for now on.HermiesIsMine wrote:I mix msw with my substrate 5:1 play sand and EE i have never needed to must my humidity is 90% and sand castle consistancy I've never had mold on anything but my fresh fruits and veggies and I personally remove the good out the next morning as it's usually covered in white mold and my husband works as a mold and water damage manager and we have a 2 year old and 4 year old so with small children I remove it but to each there own. That particular group is known for being very rigid in their recommendations and they have their reasons for that. They do have a lot of good info and really care about crabs.

Re: Conflicts of information need some help here
My opinion FWIW. When I first added a wood half tunnel to my tat, it molded. I cleaned it, soaked it in MSW, left it to dry in the sun, and it never molded again. Same with my moss, molded the first time in days. Washed, dried in Sun, wet with MSW and no mold. I only re-moisten with fresh water.
Crabs live near the ocean, everything is salty.
I didn't know the importance of MSW the first 3 years. I had tap water, gravel and dry sand. It's amazing my crabs lived. When I first put the MSW pool in the tat, the hung out dangling their legs in it for days.
I've had molts, and everyone is fine, knock wood.

I've actually never seen my crabs go in the fresh water but they do bath a lot in the salt water.Hollym2247 wrote:My opinion FWIW. When I first added a wood half tunnel to my tat, it molded.
