Hmm... I could potentially get one, I'm trying to wait a few days before making any more decisions, but the website I got it from said they could be used without a thermostat. The tank has been doing fairly well for the day I've had it. It was about 86-88 degrees F last night and this morning it was at 82 degrees F. (I'm not sure if you use F so it was ranging from 30-31 C last night and this morning it was 27 C.) If it starts to get too high I can look into one.LadyJinglyJones wrote:A thermostat is like the one in your house that controls the temperature (heat & central air usually), keeping the air temp at whatever degree you set it to. I only ask because I've read on three different reptile boards (while researching Ultratherms) that they can get quite hot & need a thermostat.... but then, reptile people use them under the tank, not so much to heat the terarium air, so I'm trying to see what other crabbers do, because I dunno.

That seems like the best plan... I'll try that too, once mine comes.

Re: List of Desired Changes
Put in a moss pit and shell shop last night! Not quite sure of the placement of the shell shop yet but I have the moss pit actually "attached" to the fishnet I made. Dusty is in it, not sure for how long but I think he's munching on it. I used the brand Hiawatha and got a big bag of it because I plan on using it for the isopods eventually too.

Also I keep finding goodies the crabs can eat in the fish/reptile section. Such as crickets, mealworms, bloodworms, and now jumbo krill!

See if you can track down frozen clams on the half shell (Omega One has them available in resealable baggies)... they'll be in the frozen food section of fish foods, and my crabs ADORED the one I gave them. Nothing left, which is not their usual modus operandi. Also, Daphnia is something they'd potentially eat in the wild, and mysis have gone over well (so far!).PinchersAndShells wrote:Also I keep finding goodies the crabs can eat in the fish/reptile section. Re: List of Desired Changes
I'm pretty sure that after I get a fish hood with fluorescent lighting, that I'm going to be upgrading from my 20 L to a 37 gallon. It's the same dimensions when it comes to length and width, but more height, which means more substrate and more climbing room. I'm going to make a list of some things I am planning on adding when I do get it. I'm just going to list some general ideas for what I'd like to get.
-Fake foliage, I enjoy a natural looking habitat.
-Real woods, like cork rounds, mopani, choya, and ghost wood. I found a good website for these.
-Of course I'd need a bigger Ultratherm, so I'm gonna put that down.
-Another thermometer/hygrometer with probe, so I can have one on one end and another on the other.
-I might change a few of my suction cup baskets out to corner ones, so the shell shops are harder to fall out of.
-Chia seeds, also any other small sprouts I could grow in the substrate.
-Deeper pools, with natural gravel siliconed to the bottom, fake plants from the fish section, and I want to add in a natural looking way to get in and out, so I could potentially use river rocks.
-Might make a bigger fish net, might not.
-I want to get a few sea urchins from either hermie's kitchen or the hermit crab patch to put in there.
-I've been looking at the hanging coconut hides with bridges from the isopod connection, but that's up in the air.

Re: List of Desired Changes
Just placed the order on the aquarium hood! I believe after it arrives I will work on getting my isopods all set up, then work on upgrading so when I finally set everything up I can put isopods in from the get-go.
On the subject of the upgrade to a 37 gallon, I have a list for that started as well:
[ ] 11" by 23" Ultratherm - $24.99
[ ] Another Thermometer/Hygrometer - $11.99
[ ] T-8 24" Zoo Med Reptisun 5.0 UVB Bulb - $20.99
[x] Interdesign Corner Shower Basket (Shell shop upgrade) - $6.99
[x] Interdesign Shower Caddy Basket (Moss pit upgrade) - $2.99
[ ] 6" Natural Cholla Wood - $1.95
[x] 12-15" Long 3.5"+ Diameter Cork Round - $15.99
[x] 10-14" Mopani - $9.99
I'll continue to edit this just as I have been for the other one.

Where did you find those good prices on the corner shower baskets and the thermometer thing you said on reptile basics?PinchersAndShells wrote:Will update this list as time goes on, and mark which I've accomplished to keep track of my progress. Might add in how much it costs as I go.

My tank is a constant upgrade, lol. My wife says I need to find a second job just to cover the crabs!

Re: List of Desired Changes
Ack! I accidentally forgot to edit that, I didn't get corner ones because they are gigantic and I wouldn't have any room for them in the 20 G L I have set up right now. I found them at Meijers, and they're about $8.kieagcarm wrote:Where did you find those good prices on the corner shower baskets and the thermometer thing you said on reptile basics?

Re: List of Desired Changes
The aquarium hood arrived! After I pretty up the 'tat and do the weekly water change and such I'll post pictures! You can see a lot better now, and I plan on shutting it off before I got to bed every night before I can get my hands on a timer. Any suggestions for those?

Re: List of Desired Changes
After looking at the wattage on the timers, I definitely cannot get one, I live in an old house with 7 people in and out, and 3 dogs and a cat, and my hermits, I'd most certainly blow the breaker.

Wow our living situations are almost similar...I live in a house with 8/9 people(half the time my youngest daughter is here, half not) 3 cats one dog and 5 hermits...PinchersAndShells wrote:After looking at the wattage on the timers, I definitely cannot get one, I live in an old house with 7 people in and out, and 3 dogs and a cat, and my hermits, I'd most certainly blow the breaker.
