New with Question about Water Depth
New with Question about Water Depth
We are new crab owners and have two crabs that I think are PP and I think they would be considered small, but on the larger see of small. One has a shell opening of about 3/4 inch and the other is a bit smaller. (We are looking for a third but have been unable to find one at any of the local pet stores for several weeks.)
I am confused about how deep the water should be in our water dishes. I read somewhere to keep the depth under 2 cm, but now that we are looking at different crabitat ideas I'm seeing deeper water pools. I have read that they need water deep enough to "submerge" in but I'm unclear if that means submerge the whole shell?
I'm sure the answer is somewhere in the forum already but I've been unable to find it. I'd appreciate any guidance.
Thank you!

Re: New with Question about Water Depth
The water dishes should be deep enough for the largest crab to fully submerge, shell and all. Most people use plastic bowls such as Glad makes and then double them up to make it easier to remove the bowl for cleaning--you just take the inner bowl (with water) out of the outer bowl, (usually partially submerged in the substrate).
You need to make sure that all crabs in your habitat can get out of the water safely. Most people use a strip of plastic canvas draped into the bowls like a ramp and somehow affixed so that it will not fall off. I think most use aquarium glue to glue the plastic canvas to the edges of the bowls. Other people stack or glue aquarium rocks in the bowls to provide climbing ramps.
I user drawer organizers as my pools and I stack river rocks in one corner so the crabbies can climb out. I also drape my wooden decor over the bowls as an extra avenue out.

That is so helpful and makes so much sense. Thank you!

Look through the photos other members post of their crabitats to get a visual on the pools.
Some people who want really deep pools use small Critter Keepers with the lids removed as pools. I think that these are too brittle and can get stress fractures and start leaking.

You can potentially double them up.mool wrote:Look through the photos other members post of their crabitats to get a visual on the pools.

haha, even then they still crack. if you're happy in going through them as they crack, and constantly replace them then you should be fine. But its a bit of an 'expensive" investment, where you can get other plastic containers that have similar measurements and not prone to cracking.
