There are a variety of resources inland, for the crabs, but the gist of it was that high quality shells for storing water were a factor in this phenomenon, and that crabs with worse shells did, in fact remain closer to the beaches.

I am kicking myself for not taking notes. :banghead:

Also, Soilentgringa, if you find the one you're looking for , would you share? :crabblush:
Interesting. Just want to know more do a big majority of crabs actually molt in the sand near the beach is this a thing that even happens ?

Molting being a cryptic activity, I haven't turned up a huge number of papers on wild molt.

Most common papers are on shell selection, food selection, conspecific agression, and chemical cues. :dontknow:

Gotcha very interested what kind of material purple pinchers mainly molt in. Isn't more sandy with ocean water mixed in? Is it mossy ? Is it soil ? I really would like to find out to farther help me care for them and make their set up as close.to native as possible.

I would say that the 5 successful molts in the your particular mixture is indicative of the substrate being fine for your bunch. I think the variables are far and many, but the old adage comes to mind, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
