I've been wondering if those small pumpkin gourds are the same as the big pumpkins people carve actually, I was thinking it'd be cute to put it in the tank with a hole carved in the side for them to go in and eat.

Oh didnt think of that! That would be cute but would it rot fast? I remove food daily so it won't rot and cause bugs...again :-/

It would rot quickly, But the crabs would love it! A hide and food, best of both worlds. Lol

From what I've researched so far, the miniature ones can be eaten too. (I've found people using them just like regular pumpkins: http://gingerbreadsnowflakes.com/node/242) Another thing that leads me to believe they will be safe is that on the safe food list pumpkin (+ entire plant) and squash (and their blossoms) are both listed as being safe. I'm thinking of getting one from a farm (to try to avoid ones that have decorative polish on the outside for decorative purposes), cutting a hole in it, taking out the seeds for baking (they last a long time, I made some for the hermits last year and they lasted me up until June of 2016) then pushing the raw guts back in for them to snack on as well as the entire thing. Then taking it out when it starts to rot. I'm thinking it's going to go over well, and I'll be sure to let everyone know if it does.

My one decorating-for-seasons concession is to change out the cloth flowers every few months to reflect the time of year: red/orange/yellow for fall, red/brown for winter (warm colors for warmth  ), pink/purple/blue for spring, white/pale green for summer.
PPs are Big Enzo, Charles Paris and Mr Pinch
On the Big Beach in the Sky: Murray, Gino, Oscar, Gordon, Ignatz, Harry and King Felix the Pale
Also Mom to Imogene the Syrian Hamster

thats such a cute idea! i might give it a try since i get pumpkins at my job with a sweet discount. i think if i do try it im going to clean the inside out so hopefully the crab-o-lantern doesnt rot as fast. ill just keep the pulp and feed it to them on the side a bit at a time. (been wanting to mix pumpkin in since i have it on hand for my senior dog this is such a cute idea how could you not!)
