Under-sub cave

Post by Erin9712 » Tue Oct 04, 2016 1:14 pm

So, I upgraded to a 29 gal (well, my mom did because I'm in college and 2.5 hours away) and she made an "underground cave" out of a mason jar. The crabs love it. There are 5 tinies/smalls in the jar with the big ol' medium/small large guarding the entrance. It's super cute. I'm upgrading again in January to a 55 gal, but this cave will give them something to do until then. Image

Looks good! I'm a fan of the glass cave - especially if you can see in.

The only thing I'm concerned about is someone molting in there because it's dark and cave-like, so I'm gonna have her keep an eye on them for me.

The mason jar is a good idea. Other crabbers have used flower pots, coconut shells, etc, to create partially submerged caves and all have been extremely popular with the crabs.

We love our under sub cave! And so do our hermies and Isopods. One side of our cave (a glass vase) is against the glass of the tat. So, we can kinda peek in and see who's in there . I used aquarium safe silicone and attached lots of tiny shells along one side so they can easily climb in and out as well as an aquarium plant for more hiding options. It also doubles as our moss pit so the isopods enjoy it too ^_^

It is a really cool idea! You could create a cave like that with just about anything....even an old cottage cheese container cut down would work!

Yup! The plan was to use a large mason jar and put it up against the side of the tank so we could see what they were doing, but mom didn't quite get what I was saying. That's okay though. It's still really cool.

Gonna use this idea because my cave is too small for Diesel!

I used to do this too. What I did was take a 2L pop bottle, cut the top off, and left the bottom on. The I cut a side off (about 1/3 of the bottle) bury it the same way, and this way the crabs can dig from inside of it as well so they don't miss out on any digging room. They also can get below the sub in there to molt.

That's a wonderful idea! I might have to steal that. I was worried about the loss of molting space by putting the mason jar in there.
