Recommended tank size.
Recommended tank size.
Okay, so I'm moving and should be in the new house by Christmas. I'm so excited because I'm gonna upgrade tanks. I'm on Craigslist right now and I'm looking at a 55 gallon, a 75 gallon, and a 100 gallon. I was curious as to with one I should get. I know that I want a very nice, large tank and that obviously a 100 gallon would be the biggest, but I'm unsure about the actual sizes of the tanks. Are the the same deal as a 20 gallon and a 29 gallon in that they have the same foot print but the 29 gallon is just taller? I have just never had a giant tank and I don't know much about them.

Hi, these are some big tanks. Do yourself a favor and go to any online pet store and view tank dimensions, so theres no surprises.
Also: Tanks on the larger, end consider the weight of the substrate. If it doesnt come with a stand you're going to need a Plan B.
Good luck!

I do know that a 55 gallon has a lot of depth, but is narrow. Whereas the 75 gallon is just as deep but is several inches wider. I personally am going to get a 75 gallon in the future when I upgrade since I like the extra width. I'm not sure about the 100 gallon. It's all in what you want! Have fun upgrading, I'm jealous

The best thing I've found for estimating these things is this guide: http://www.alysta.com/books/fishtank.htm
4 PPs + 1 E = Dusty, Momo, Seasalt, & Elvis

Okay
I'll definitely look into the 75 gallon then. I'll also check the dimensions for the 100. I wasn't going to upgrade but the last time I went home (I'm in college) I found out that my mom has bought a few crabs because she feels bad for them. I'm setting up an extra tank tomorrow for them when I get home so it won't be overcrowded.

I upgraded too a 55 and thought wow im gonna get more crabs... They've all molted several times plus my giant rescue. Im upgrading very soon. If there was anything i could do differently, i would have stuck with about 5 to better track them. That's just me though
Good luck with your build i hope you'll keep us posted!

I would love to have a small number (around 5 or 6) and be able to keep track of them. That was actually my plan, however, my mom is home and I am not. Lol. I've finally got her to stop, thank goodness. Now I've just got to get a big enough tank to house them all together.KayedeeLove<3 wrote:I upgraded too a 55 and thought wow im gonna get more crabs... Re: Recommended tank size.
We recommend getting the largest tank you can afford to prevent you having to upgrade in a few years when your crabs outgrow a tank. That being said: It depends on how many crabs you want/ have, your price range, and the size of the crabs in question. I feel like a 55 is a good size if you only have 6 or less, and they aren't very big, and you can get them at the dollar per gallon sales. It truly depends on preference. Keep in mind though, with the larger tanks ( more than a 75 gallon) that you need to be sure the house can handle the weight, as larger tanks hold several hundred pounds of sand. New houses shouldn't have issues, but older ones might. Just don't want to see any foundation issues. lol
Re: Recommended tank size.
It's a new split level. The basement/bottom floor is divided into a living room, bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room. It's capable to hold the weight. I was just seeing that if there's a real difference in the tank sizes or if it's only a slight difference like the 20 gallon and the 29 gallon.
There's a guy in my area selling a 100 gallon tank and a 75 gallon tank for $75 a piece.
Now I'm just deciding if I want a longer tank or a wider tank. It's stressful. Lol

Re: Recommended tank size.
I would go with the larger one, but that's just my preference. Especially with them being the same price. There wouldn't be a huge difference in the 100 and 75 though, so choose whichever you think would be easiest to decorate/ fit into your new home.
