Crab on the hamster wheel
Re: Crab on the hamster wheel
I know people who have tried the saucer. They weren't super happy with the results. The smallest crabs could use it but it tipped easily and wasn't nearly as versatile as the wheel.
Re: Crab on the hamster wheel
That looks so great! I'm thrilled to hear they are using it! I should get a second one, too.GotButterflies wrote:kieagcarm wrote:GotButterflies wrote:No, I had bought a second one. I have one at each end of my tank now.
As you can tell, I like things to match. Lol.

Oh! Ok:) Got it! Thanks!!GotButterflies wrote:Yes, I hung it upside down. It has a little bar.Kermie16 wrote:Ok. I'm going to have to try this too! So looks like u just put the whole thing in upside down with the base hanging on the edge of the tank. Is that right? Is there like a hole or something on the back of the wheel where u hang it with the command hook that u mentioned?

This is a great idea! I can't believe that the crabs actually use it! I'm definitely getting a wheel for mine
My adorable PPs: Charlotte, Peaches, Slowbro, and Jamarcus

So, I just got one today. GotButterflies, how did u get the holes into the wheel to get zip ties in?

Thinking I will need to drill some holes

Re: Crab on the hamster wheel
I drilled a bunch of small holes in mine. Even more than I ended up using for the zip ties. It turned out to be helpful for letting accumulated sand out, too.
Re: Crab on the hamster wheel
Also, putting a few along the back wall gave them some extra traction points for their walking legs. I used the smallest drill bit for those so they wouldn't catch their legs and snap them off.
Re: Crab on the hamster wheel
Didn't even think about the sand or the size of the holes! Thanks, mlakers:)mlakers wrote:Also, putting a few along the back wall gave them some extra traction points for their walking legs. I used the smallest drill bit for those so they wouldn't catch their legs and snap them off.

Re: Crab on the hamster wheel
I went to buy one today, petco, and they had soft ball sized crabs! I've never seen such huge crabs. And they were completely red, looked so different than the pps. There were smaller ones that were definitely pp's the tank was full of pinchers that had been ripped off, legs, and a dead crab. I was devastated. I ended up freaking out on the worker and leaving without getting my wheel.

Yeah. It's so sad I purposefully try to avoid that area of the pet stores because it is too painful to see and I feel like we have met our max for our 55g. I did notice zoo med selling glow in the dark shells Awful.

Crab on the hamster wheel
Here are close up pictures to of the first wheel I did. I had taken them to show my mom. I had used a 1/8 size drill bit. I do the zip ties to go the way the crabs are walking. So their legs don't get caught. I only do 1 small loop and pull it super tight~ no way for crab to get caught in it. Close it on outside. I bought the regular silent spinner which is considered the medium. My crabs are large/xlarge& jumbo. Right now only jumbos walking it- lots of room. Each wheel that I have is being used!! Very cool!!
