Aussie Breeding Success Dec 2016/Jan2017
Wednesday 28th December. Update before I turn off the light for night time.
Moving and obviously alive 8
Dug down but partly visible 2
Others may well be under but not visible.
I am very pleased with this number 8-10+ For my first successful attempt that's pretty good I think.
Now comes the yoyo up down up down of regular moulting. Hopefully they have all got the hang of moulting and survive and grow.

I'm not sorry about the loss coz it gives the other a better chance of survival. Seems like a hard attitude but it is nature's way.

Thursday 29th December 2016 Day 26
Happy to report that my tank is crawling... Heaps of babies out and about. Ive given them names but that won't last as soon as they change shells. Snowflake, Salmon, Cornetto, Stripe, Little Stripe, Sandy, Big Sandy 2, Tiny Sandy, Zebra, Piggy, Red and probably another couple of Sandy coz there are a heap in the same shell that is exactly the colour of the sub.

Basically I am doing it full time. Mainly because I am not getting anything else done around the house. I could sit and watch the tank for hours (OK I'll be honest here I do sit and watch for ages at a time) Lucky I am retired so don't have to be distracted by WORK!!!GotButterflies wrote:Oh my goodness! So thats what, about 14 right now? Amazing that you got so many this time round! I know it's not over yet & you're bound to have some fatalities, but it really seems that you're rocking this breeding atempt. You are a crab breeding rockstar.

Seriously surprised myself. I'm thinking about 13 but who knows. There are so many in shells that are so much the same it is impossible to tell them apart to count UNLESS they are all out at the same time. I think I just got lucky as there was way less in this group than last time. SO that let me keep on top of water quality more easily. I also noticed them straight away and acted quickly unlike last time when they were 3-4 days old before I did anything about it.

After their first molts, when can you put them in the tanks with the bigger hermies? What criteria do they need to meet before then? Do they have to be of a certain size?

Natalie's are 4 years old and still not in the big tank. I will keep the in their own tank as long as possible. Don't know what I'll do with another lot of babies though! Heaven help me.Kermie16 wrote:After their first molts, when can you put them in the tanks with the bigger hermies? What criteria do they need to meet before then? That is so great that you are retired!! I think my family would literally have to give me a guilt trip to pull me away from those cuties! I can only imagine the special bond that you have with all of your hermits! What a special experience!!!!! I believe everything happens for a reason. Great job Sue!! I hope that you are proud of yourself! You should be!

Id assume once they are teeny size they would be safe for gen pop but really good question. I wonder if they need easier to eat food as well?

At the moment they are getting ground up fine beta grains (they got them whole in the jars) powdered cuttlebone, powdered black worms and meal worms, spirulina powder, crushed up dehydrated spinach, insectivore mix, powdered dehydrated mango, crushed egg shell, crushed blue swimmer crab shell, bee pollen,Brine shrimp eggs and a little bit of all natural chicken and sweet corn baby puree. I also put a tiny tiny baby grape in that I split open.Just Jay wrote:Id assume once they are teeny size they would be safe for gen pop but really good question. BUT having watched that one rip its sibling apart I think they are actually more able than you would think to eat stuff. I will put in some tiny fragments of chicken in a day or so.
