Homemade coconut huts

I just made a couple of coconut huts.


I bought a coconut a couple of months ago and forgot about it. I found it this morning and cut it open to find it went bad. The good news is the meat practically fell out leaving a nice clean shell behind. I boiled in a diluted msw solution and then baked it at 270 to dry it out.

Considering they cost around $9 plus shipping on amazon, its worth having the whole house smell like fermented coconut. My wife doesn't agree though.

Haha! How'd you get the entrances all round & cute? When I tried to cut through a coconut shell the results were not... attractive.

For future reference: I bought a bunch of coconut shells from a party/wedding website and they were like $1.00 each. They came in rough, smooth and between. They are meant to be used as food and drink vessels as well as candle holders and bras (!); so all were safe.

Good on you for the repurposing of a shell, but just know that coconut shells aren't that expensive if you know where to look.

eBay is also a good option. I saw one listing for 20 half shells, with shipping under $20.

I used a dremel cutoff wheel to score the outline and whacked it with a hammer. Between that and the bandsaw used to half the coconut, they took about 5 minutes to make.

Well, I got the coconut with the intention of using it for crab food. But by time I remembered it, it was too far gone.

Besides, I only need so many coconut bikinis.

What?! I thought we all needed a coconut bikini for each day of the week?!?! But in all seriousness, you did a great job. You don't know how many people struggle with making homemade huts. That being said, proper tools will do wonders. Good on you for making the sacrifice of rotten coconut for your crabs. I'm sure they will be very thankful.
