Pool w silicones rocks

Post by agentcrabby » Mon Jan 30, 2017 8:46 am

I made new pools FW and MW for my gang. I used proper silicone to adhere gravel to the sides and rocks to the bottom. I am wondering if they will be able to climb out as its vertical for a few inches.

Please post pics of similar pools that are being used successfully. I will post mine when I get home later...

Thanks!

I tried making a ramp out of pebbles using silicon. After 2 months of curing, it still hadn't cured. It still smelled like the day I siliconed it. I just tossed it in the trash and came up with another idea. I should have done it like this to start with. This way is much better IMO. (Nothing in these are siliconed. Makes cleaning a breeze.)

Edit- I used marbles in bottom so my bowls wouldn't get mixed up. Blue for salt and red for fresh.

The bottoms of my pools are textured because I used silver ware drawer oranizers/holders. While I like the look of natural pebbles siliconed in place, I think it would be impossible to keep them clean without them popping out.

I use the rubber lined drawer organizers with a piece of slate leaned against the inside as a ramp. If I have really small crabs I put a few river rocks in the bottom.

Since nothing is glued in, it all comes apart and can be individually scrubbed and/or tossed into the dishwasher.

I have a S and a F written in Sharpie on the outside of each pool.

Great! What are the ramps made of? Also is there a chance the crab could be trapped behind the ramp?

Ramps are plastic canvas zip tied to rim of bowl. Haven't had any problems with babies getting stuck behind it. Honestly my PPs will sit on edge of bowl or at very top of my ramp. I've never witnessed them submerged. My straws do however submerge in SW pool.

Ok thanks. Can they climb mostly vertically along the pebbles that are affixed to the side of my Tupperware?

They should be able to. Other crabbers have done their bowls the way you described. I just had problems with them curing for some reason. Guess I used too much sealant. (I used aquarium sealant if that makes a difference). I didn't feel safe using the bowls so I went to plan B.

My crabs do fully submerge (though never for very long) in a pool with siliconed pebbles. I did layers of pebbles til they were pretty chunky. The whole thing slides out of the tupperware container (silicone won't adhere to plastic for very long) & I can scrub it with a bristly brush. I don't think it will last for years, but the crabs do seem to like scuttling down the rocky mounds to the bottom.

This is it:
