Re: Gettin 45 gallon setup, many questions.
Ok guys question on my top/light source. Tank came with this top and I'm thinking I need a screen top to be able to use my UVA lighting kit? But I'm having a hard time finding size even in local pet stores. I do have a UTH I can transfer over from my 10gallon, do u think that would work?
Either way as you can see a piece has been taken out of the back where tank was used for filters before, so it that guarantee I have to get something different? I love the top n the lighting, even have a black light bulb that will fit it (if they are allowed) n I'd love to make this work, again piece is taken out but maybe they sell replacement pieces? Or should I go with the sliding glass top?
Maybe the crabs what hate this lighting built in to the top?
Mostly trying make it functional at the moment for the lowest cost. If I could find a piece for top n keep this top/lighting n just buy the bigger size UTH? May be cheaper? Your thoughts?! Lol

To make the hood work right now, you can get a piece of plastic canvas/mesh and cover the gap using hot glue for the seal. If too much heat/humidity is lost then you can cover that mesh with press n seal, seran wrap or packing tape (sticking side out) leaving a few holes for air flow.
As far as the black light goes, make sure it's a reptile night light bulb. If you're looking for a good night light, I suggest moon glo bulbs.... With UVB, I think the bulb has to shine directly in tat without screen, mesh, or glass in between. Things in between cause the UVB to be filtered leaving little to nothing left. I don't quite understand how UVB works, so I may be telling you wrong.

Daws is correct. Uvb gets filtered out with glass/screen. You can look under the lighting section in the forums.
I personally love the glass tops for holding humidity and heat in.
The acurite meter also tells you high & low for humidity & temp for the last 24 hours.

See, I've been in that boat before. I REALLY would love to implement UV lighting to see if there is any benefit, BUT. It is so darn difficult to implement that I've all but given up. I'm seriously not comfortable with an electrical item in an environment with humidity that high. I see it as a fire risk. Bah. One day. One day I'll figure it out. haha

Gettin 45 gallon setup, many questions.
I bought my glass tops off of the Internet. With my uvb light, I prop the front of my glass tops up and put my strip lights there with the uvb bulbs in them. Sometimes I put press n seal around it. I am in the room when I do it. Only one time have I seen a crab go near the bulb. I also do not like any electrical things inside the crabitat.

Okay so I found one on Amazon with your measurements but it's $97. If you're like me, that's way too much. Drs Foster & Smith has the same model for $23. The model number is the same on this site but if you go down to the measurements, they are totally different. I really think these measurements are off. You'll want to get the 36" (model number 29036). Based on model number alone, it should work.... I attached pics so you could see.

Just realized you said 12.5 x 36.25. Are you sure he measured right? That's an odd size. It does say in their description that it will fit a 45 gal. If it doesn't work, I would modify it to make it work. It's probably the closest size that will fit your needs. Good luck!

If you want to get crafty, it's possible to build your own top using materials from the hardware store such as plexiglass and door/cabinet handles
