water dishes
when making water dishes - do you make them so they can swim in them? if not why use such deep dishes?

Yes, they need to be able to submerge themselves all of the way under the water like fries mentioned. Do make sure that you have a safe way for them to get in and out so that they don't drown though.

Re: water dishes
so what is a safe way? I had rocks in one and shells in the other-- but then they could not submerged -- just walk on the top of the items

I have tall plastic plants in the water dishes that the hermit crabs use to climb out.

You can use craft mesh to allow them to get in and out, or use aquarium decor. I do put gravel on the bottom of mine. I have seen some make pools using aquarium silicone, but that does take time bc it needs to air dry. My pools are 5 quarts each. I used gladware tupperware containers that I purchased at my local grocery store.

Here is a link to Daws' crabitat: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 8&t=112709
That way you can see our pools I recently put craft mesh on mine, but I don't turn the lights on in that room at night. I'll try to remember to take a new picture tomorrow.

My dishes are also made of Tupperware from Wal-Mart. They hold about 4.5-5 cups each. I used plastic canvas as ramps and marbles in the bottom. (Different colors just so I can tell them apart.) Nothing is siliconed for ease of cleaning.

Re: water dishes
GB, when cleaning, do you actually removes those water dishes? Or, do you just refill and leave them in there?GotButterflies wrote:

Re: water dishes
I remove them once a month to give them a good scrub down with dechlorinated water. They are doubled up. Once a week I vacuum them out using an aquarium gravel/water siphon vacuum. Each of my pools are 5 quarts.

Re: water dishes
My isopods use the mesh more than my crabs do. They need to drink.
