I think a fiddler might be aggressive....perhaps a more experienced crabber will chime in??

I've mostly read comments to the effect that keeping fiddlers with hermies is a bad idea - fiddler crabs are best off with a setup called a paladarium.... you'd want a filter for that. Itd be challenging to get the appropriate depth of sand for hermits without risk of flooding from the substantial volume of brackish water that the fiddlers need. Both need dry land - but to different degrees.

Also, i think it would be too stressful for such dissimilar animals to have to deal with each other in such a confined space. There would be so little space for the two factions to each stake out. Conspecific aggression is enough to worry about in captivity, without adding a whole other dimension with interspecies drama.

It probably can be done .... but shouldn't be done.

Edit - but that is an extremely cute crab pictured. :D

I started a crab rescue/Adoption and education program here in montana. so far I have took in 3 hermits, a turtle I couldn't say no to and this little fiddler. 2 crabs who have adopters waiting for them to go through molt while they get to learn about them and volentearing helping with classes. I thought I had a tank for him to find that the tank had a crack in the bottom.

As a temporary measure, try a large plastic tote. You want a clear one, and I'd get a big 'un.

You do need to be careful about heating in the totes, not using a zoomed, probably... but you can drill holes anywhere you need, and that is nice. Fiddlers do need a filter for their water, and I've read that they're good climbers & so you want an in-tank filter, not one that hangs off the back. :D

ya I found that out fast I put him in my fish tank when I fist got him found him in my filter media at the top. glad he dident get loose. I then looked him up an knew it wouldn't be fair to keep him in a fish tank.

Haha - well at least you all ready have the instant ocean!

Oh, and when you're mixing the brackish water, let it aerate before you add the little guy.

Lady has covered most of the basics... I'm just here you mentions Wod's setup, which may interest you can give you some ideas on how to set up a basic and functioning fiddler setup
