So sorry!
If you don't find any adoptions on here for a while, there are Facebook crab groups as well that post adoption notices. HCA has its own page.

That was mool, writing about freshwater tanks where fish medical treatments had been used an leached into the silicone seals of the tank.KayedeeLove<3 wrote:Also, do you have a used tank? I posted a new to me used tank on here that I was fixing up and a member commented that used tanks are risky because if they were used for certain purpose they can secrete a toxic substance. Don't quote me on it and some one with more knowledge please chime in if I'm wrong. Just what I've heard. But I've always used used tanks with no problem.

If youre worried about this you can talk to the seller about what medications they've used in the past, then do a quick internet search on that kind of treatment and check to see if there's a warning about harm to snails or crustacians, then you'll know if it's crab appropriate. For example, my fish tank would be fine for crabs because I love my snails & so have to treat fish illness in an ISO tank.

Crabs repair their bodies when they moult, so some of the damage they've sustained in going through the pet trade will be healed. If you get your crabs from a responsible crab owner on a forum like this one you'll be receiving hardier crabs.Latoshia wrote:What makes adopting different then the pet store?
If you get them on Craigslist from an inexperienced person, you're basically doing a rescue and should prepare for possible heart break.

There are actually a lot of responsible crab owned on Craigslist as well. Another great thing is that they often come with tank and all. So don't rule out Craigslist...LadyJinglyJones wrote:Crabs repair their bodies when they moult, so some of the damage they've sustained in going through the pet trade will be healed. I agree with this! My big guy (my pride and joy) was an option from cl. Previous owner had him for years before giving him to me! Nice sharp tips and hairy legs. He's my most fearless crab he never runs when I'm digging around in his house unless it is up my arm. The first time he did this it terrified me cause most of my other crabs run except one.Hermiearth wrote:There are actually a lot of responsible crab owned on Craigslist as well. Re: Not moving...not responding to my touch...
Usually adoptions crabs are hardier in general, not only because of care. I've never had an adoption that had total proper care...even from on here unfortunately. :/ That's not to say that there aren't adoptions from those who care for their crabs. But, that being said, if they survived in terrible conditions for so long, they tend to be the "stronger" crabs if you may. So when they are put into good conditions, they tend to do a lot better than those that are bought. My first hermits were purchased, and I never had any issues. It just really depends on what they've been through. This time of year though, it is likely those crabs were shipped during cold weather, meaning they could have been weaker. You really never know, it's complete chance every time.
