Instant Ocean Products

Post by CrabbyMommy2017 » Tue Mar 21, 2017 4:54 pm

Hello Board Members!

New to crabbing and wondering if anyone can give me a link (preferably amazon) to an instant ocean product that can be mixed up in smaller batches?

Been reading product descriptions online until my head is spinning. Just want to mix up small amount of salt water for my crabs, but the instant ocean products im finding are for mixing 10 gallons at a time.

Thanks in advance for your help. I hope everyone is having a good week so far.

Take Care,
CrabbyMommy2017

10 gallons is the smallest I can find. I broke mine down in tablespoons (TBSP) because it stores better in the box.

* 1 1/2 teaspoon per 8 oz (1 cup)
* 1 TBSP per 16 oz (1 pint)
* 2 TBSP (1/8 cup) per 32 oz (1 quart)
*4 TBSP (1/4 cup) per 64 oz (1/2 gallon)
* 8 TBSP (1/2 cup) per 128 oz (1 gallon)

Edit: Salt per Water... A lot of us make it by the gallon.

The smallest i've seen available is ten gallons. You don't have to use the whole thing. It salt, so you can just scoop out the amount you need.

Thanks for your replies.

I guess what ive been looking at on amazon is a liquid application. Its in little bottles that drip out one drop of product at a time just like the dechlorinator i used to use for my fish. I would rather buy this stuff online. Petsmart is the closest pet supply store to my location and ive learned that just about everything we get from there is cheaper on amazon (sometimes less than half the price).

What I have been using thus far (as far as water mixing containers) are the Classico spaghetti jars that I've been saving for years now. That has proven a useful thing to save. I have used them to store chocolate milk, juice, water, and anything you can think of, when packing up my toddlers to take them on trips.

The crabs came to me a few weeks ago with all their 'stuff'. Including dechlorinator and 'hermit crab salt water conditioner'. Now ive almost used up all the latter and need to purchase some more, but im told to go with instant ocean instead. I have a good supply of dechlorinator and stress coat already from when we had fish.

The Classico jars are about 24 ounces. I've been mixing the chemicals (in dishwasher-cleaned jars) and then leaving the lid off of the jars for 24 hours before using the water. Im not sure that its necessary, but seemed like a good idea.

I use gallon jugs to mix my water. it is 1/2 of a cup per gallon for the instant ocean. I buy my salt in a large bag, and store it with a chip clip on it. You don't want any air to get exposed to the salt or it will crystalize. The salt should looks like, well, salt. You don't want it to clump. :) If you are leaving the lid off of the jars for 24 hours for the chlorine to evaporate, please know that you still need to use a dechlorinator. The cloramine, ammonia and other toxic metals in the water do not evaporate that way. :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

GotButterflies

Still using dechlorinator. The bottle of dechlorinator that came with the crabs from previous owner is actually marketed for beta fish tanks, but previous owner said its all she ever used. When it runs out i still have some dechlorinator left from when we had the goldfish. I just like to be thorough (why ive been leaving it out 24 hours). Then also using the 'hermit crab salt water conditioner' in the salt water jars on top of that. The latter product doesnt mention dechlorination anywhere on the label though. Can you tell me what exactly it says on the label of the instant ocean that you usually buy? Apparently there are different ones and im trying not to over do it. About how much does it cost?
Thanks,

Hi,

The Instant Ocean we use comes in a purple and white box, and is a bag of salt, not a liquid.

You can find it at most pet stores, like PetSmart/PetCo/PetSuppliesPlus.

1/2 C of Instant Ocean for 1 gallon of dechlorinated water. 1/4 C for 1/2 gallon, 1/8 C for a quart, etc.

You can use an empty distilled water or washed out milk jug to make your water in, or you can mix it up in smaller amounts.

I believe the stickied guide in the Food/Water section has a breakdown of smaller amounts.
