Noisy air stones?

Post by elly_bananas » Thu Apr 20, 2017 9:53 pm

Bought an air pump and a small quarter size stone for my SW baths. Seems pretty noisy in there once i poke my head in. Does the noise and or vibration bother the crabs at all? Also it should be known my 10 gal tank sits vacant while i sort out temp and humidity kinks, even tho its fully furnished :D .

I think comparatively speaking going from complete quiet to using an air pump it is going to be louder. The crabs will get used to it, as will you. Did you personal the airstones first? A lot of people forget to do that. :)

Not sure, but if I take a guess I think she meant soak it. You're supposed to soak them for an hour or so prior or using them to get the gunk out and get them ready to go. Otherwise they're sort of loud.

Well, no i did not but there arent any crabs yet, im tryin to get temp and humidity down solid before i get them so they have a perfect environment to move into. The stone is working and is in there now so i suppose it is soaking ahead of time. I do plan on changing that water obvi. But hey, follow up question lol.... with just one stone for now, should it go in sw bath or fw?

@GotButterflies
Yeah! My guessing skills are still functional. :lol:
See, now I can tell my friends that being a fish nerd had benefits. Or maybe I'm just a nerd in general. Either way, I know things that every once in a while are helpful. :D
For example, in class about a month ago, another student mentioned the pregnant giraffe, April, and asked our science teacher how long giraffes are pregnant for. He stared at them blankly but I answered without skipping a beat: "The gestation period of a giraffe generally ranges from 13-15 months."
Everyone stared at me and my friend laughed. "She works at a zoo so she knows stuff."
Anyways, with regards to the airstone, one time I forgot to soak mine and it didn't work well. It has to be unplugged and not in use when you soak it for the best effect in my opinion. Otherwise, perhaps trying another brand would reduce the noise. I bought a cheap one that was loud but it runs significantly quieter after having been soaked.

Lol! Isn't it a bummer that they cut the live feed of April?

I know! She's such a wonderful mommy and a beautiful giraffe, too. This is her fourth little one so she certainly knows what she's doing! I think they're having a contest to name her baby... might have a go at it. :D

Elly, how's the airstone working now? Sometimes they run better after a few days.
