Still huge regardless!

U mean from another thread/topic you started? I don't know about from the site but it maybe the same as the app. You basically hit copy url and it'll create a link that you can paste anywhere.

Photos from your phone/tablet... Download the tapatalk app. Find HCA. Then create or reply to a thread. When doing so, there will be a square box with mountain on it. Click this to upload pics.

Upgrading from tote to tank

Post by GotButterflies » Wed May 17, 2017 10:43 am

Sweet Erin! You will need a piece of plexiglass for the front so that the substrate can be higher than the doors and not fall out when you open them.

Edit: bummer on the moss ball! Mine are real. I got them at the fish store. Maybe a weight is inside yours?

The Plexiglas is a good idea. I need to run to lowes today to grab play sand, I'll have them cut me a piece while I'm there. How do you suggest I secure the Plexiglas to the front side?

Maybe this is a long shot but what if you could cut a clear tote lid (like from Walmart) I'm not sure if it's work but it'd be a lot cheaper haha

I'm not sure that you would have to secure it. If you wanted you could use aquarium sealant.

How much was the plexiglass? I know they sell sheets at lowes for $25 but they are huge.

Maybe you could go to a local window/glass shop and buy a piece of glass for cheaper... or try Amazon for a cheap piece of plexiglass?

this may or may not work but it's an idea. What about clear packing tape and hot glue?

Hot glue would degrade quickly. Better off using silicone that's aquarium safe... or make sure it is cut well and just slide it and use the weight of the sub to hold it ib place....

That crabitat found on pinterest is sugarselections crabitat when she removed the pool as it leaked... the silicone remains stayed before she upgraded.

If you're just using a sheet of plastic to hold in the sub, you won't have to permanently anchor it unless you wanted to. The sub behind it and the raised glass in front of it will be more than enough to keep it from moving.

Check around for prices on plexi - there are different grades of clarity and different thickness. The thicker it is and the clearer it is the more expensive it is. Depending on how much higher you wanted the substrate you could probably get away with using two pieces instead of one long one, but it might leak in the middle or not look as nice. I'm trying to remember how much I spent on my last piece, I think it was around 15 for a decent sized section.

Packing tape makes a permanent bond with plexiglass. (Okay, not really, but it is nearly impossible to remove if it's been pressed on well and heated up a little bit with a hair dryer. ;) )

So if I fit the packing tape against the grate of the vent, perfectly, it should hold?

I'm pretty sure the black grates are ABS plastic. That doesn't bond so well with anything.
