Lid for 55 gallon

Post by NilyahEyakam » Mon May 22, 2017 10:56 am

So I bought a tank with the dollar per gallon sale and it has no cover. I thought about building those easy sliding glass lids but it was 20 bucks just to get it for my 29 gallon, so if I'm going to spend the money it might as well be something better than that. I really like the marineland hinge glass tops but I've never had to deal with the brace on a tank before, so I'm confused how to order it.
What are some things you guys do for lids on a 55 gallon aquarium?? I'm totally out of ideas and when I Google it the lids offered don't really prevent crab escapes.

Hi, i got the https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00LH0FF ... reen+cover
Its a little pricy but the hinge lets you keep your light one
One side w/o having to disturb it when entering the tat. Lid Clips https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HLBO4 ... DN1E0V5BK9
will hold it down to keep them inside. [Ive not tested any of this as im going up to a 40B and just purchased this stuff] this is just my build. You're going to get a lot of great advice. :)

You'll need the 48". It's $30.99 and free shipping two days only using code ITSFREE

Edit: set a heavy rock or a book on top to prevent escapees.

What do you do about humidity with the screen?

Does that one work even with the brace in the middle?? I was planning on getting that one but I'm worried the brace would cause it to not fit.

Yes it comes as two pieces... Scriol down to bottom of page and it'll tell you the dimensions and the recommended tank size.

I opted for the screen bc glass is too heavy. I have nerve issues and cant hold onto anything heavy.
i put a thin sheet of acetate under the screen lid it fit perfectly. Had to cut out a circle around the dome light for the UVB to pass . Hoping theres enough sub to keep humidity up. Test running this tank in less than 2 weeks. Image

I recommend the glass lids as well due to humidity issues

I like the hinged in the middle screen lids for 4 foot tanks. Just ordered two for my 75 gallons tonight, actually. Humidity can be adjusted with heavy plastic if plexi is a no go due to price. I have shattered so many of the glass lids!

I got plexiglass off Amazon for less than $10 for two sheets and I just trimmed them to fit the top of my tank.

The screen lid is over the plexi inserts.

I ended up going with the glass. I keep it down with duct tape in the back and some rocks.
I also got two strawberries today!! My lfs had them. Open to name suggestions ImageImageImage

Congratulations on the straws! Beautiful!

Is that coconut mat on top of your sand? How do the hermits get down to dig?

It's a mat on a piece of acrylic dowels. It's like a second level, you can kind of see it to the right side on the picture of the tank I have two on top so it's like 3 levels. But under it's all free sand space
