I'm printing shells too! Is the model you used the one made by Team USA on thingiverse or one you made yourself? I've made a few of the oxystele and turbo style shells off thingiverse and plan on printing one I'm making from scratch based on the brown mountain land snail. This will all be over the course of the next year and I will be adding a twist eventually that I can't reveal just yet

Just kidding about not being able to tell you guys! I'm hopefully making shells that are internally similar to a turbo or such but externally have decorations and such that attach to them. Like how cool would it be to attach a little 3d printed city or lego platform you could build off to your crab's shell.Dragonfire1577 wrote:I'm printing shells too! ABS might actually be safe. It's what is used for all aquarium filters, heaters, skimmers, etc. I would suggest contacting a reef keeping forum and see what they say. If it's safe for saltwater invertebrates it would also be safe for our hermits.

Do you have the .stl files? I'm having a really hard time finding good sized shells for my crabs and this is a perfect solution.

Would probably be dangerous for the crabs honestly. I've had one or two bury in decorated shells and they couldn't get back up above ground after their molt.Dragonfire1577 wrote:Just kidding about not being able to tell you guys! Any materials used to print shells would have to be crab safe. They modify and pick at their shells and the salt water and sand will erode the plastic.bolex wrote:Do you have the .stl files? I'm having a really hard time finding good sized shells for my crabs and this is a perfect solution.

Ohhh wow! This is so cooool! I've seen many pics online of poor wild crabbies wearing all manor of garbage as shells because of the shell shortage. Plastic caps, pipe fittings, jars, broken bottle ends, even a ping pong ball and a babydoll head. It Would be very neat if this technology could some day help them. Also I saw a pic of a marine crab at legoland wearing a shell made of logos lol just thought I'd mention it because of your lego shell idea

(The shell had glued legos on top.... If you look closely you can see the basic shell... )

Pla or abs? I am trying to print custom fit hermit crab shells of my own. I did some research, but didn't come up with anything. There also are two other types, but those are the two top kinds of filament in general.
