Are these bulbs good for hermit crabs?

I have the day time one and my hermit crabs seem to be doing good, is it safe & is the night time one safe too?

Spot type bulbs will heat one little area to a very warm temp. They are for use with reptiles that need a basking spot but need to also have the rest of the tank cooler. Look for just a moon glow or night heat bulb without it saying 'spot". Those produce a more even heating.

^^ such as exo terra day or exo terra night bulbs. They come in many watts (15, 25, 40, 50, 60, 75, 100). Check your hood/dome to see the max bulb for it - some only do 25 watt max.

Okay thanks guys, I noticed I don't have even heat throughout the tank. Will those bulbs work in a dome lamp or do I need to get a hood? I have a 40 gallon tank so a hood is hard to find. And what wattage would I need for a 40 gallon tank?

Hoods really should be limited to non heat bulbs, the plastic is not made to handle those sorts of temps and can melt. I used a low wattage heat bulb in one once that should have been safe but it melted the top.

For heat bulbs stick with metal domes or reptile fixtures. A large clamp lamp from the hardware store for work lights or chick breeders are safe as well as long as they have a high wattage rating. (150W or higher and make sure they can be used with incandescent bulbs. With LEDs out now there are some being made that are not able to handle heat.)

The problem with heat bulbs is there is no way of knowing what suze you need until you start trying different watts. For the price of a larger bulb and fixture, it would be the same or less to go with a good UTH like ultratherm, and there is the bonus of not having to wake up to blown bulbs and a cold tank.

I aggree with wode! UTH are sooo much better as far as heating goes. Best places to buy them would be http://www.reptilebasics.com or http://www.beanfarm.com Lights tend to zap humidity. So please keep that in mind.

With my 40 breeder (no longer set-up) I used a 40 watt day and a 40 watt night. Both on dimmers so I could control the heat. Ideally you'll want a night bulb rated higher than the day bulb since they produce a different kind of heat. I used the same bulb to mimic natural drop in temp in the wild..... Trying to get the wattage right is pretty much a guessing game. I started with a 75 day and night then worked my way down til I found something that worked better... I have tons of bulbs laying around because of this. I suggest getting an ultratherm and calling it a day!

Please take into account location and room temperature when making recommendation on bulb sizes! Specific brands pump out different levels of heat as well. I had to use a 60w Flukers moonglow for my 30 gallon in the middle of winter here in Ohio.

Very true! I wasn't recommending bulb sizes. That's just what worked for me. And I'm in NC if that helps
