Molting? New crab owner help!

Post by Meggrace5 » Tue Oct 03, 2017 6:36 pm

Hi everyone!

I’ve had my crab since July and have been waiting for the first molt. We have a mix of sand and eco earth that the crab has loved to dig deep in and then come up etc. but for about 4 days he’s been very slightly dug in, like basically on the surface but I just can’t see the hole in his shell. I thought they went really deep to molt so I’m afraid he’s dead. Hoping I’m wrong and someone can reassure me. I have left him totally alone but have sniffed around and it smells fresh in there. What do you all think?!

hi, im pretty sure hes not molting. a molter will "disappear" . you will not see him.
check your gauges & make sure your temps /humidity is on point. thats always my first bit of advice. if thats good then maybe thats his personality. you'll come to see that crabs are very weird.

you havent had him long, hes still destressing from the horrors of the pet store. if your environment is right, just leave him be.

I agree. Destressing more likely than molting. PPS is also more likely than molting

Hello! Don’t dig he could be destressing, cooling off, or just hanging out. One of my crabs did this the other day. As long as your tank conditions are on point, don’t worry about it

I got my first four 15 days ago now I have seen very very little of them I assume they are nestled in a moss pit somewhere quite happy napping and noshing.
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=115534. Check out my new crabby Adventures here maybe compare. I hear some crabs will bury or hide for weeks or months depending. Just keep their house how they like it while they nap.
