Water fountain in crabitat
Would it be safe to put an electric water fountain in my crabitat?

Re: Water fountain in crabitat
When people ask questions like this...I look at it from my perspective. No. Here is why...possible flooding...possible drowning - (hermit getting stuck with pump intake), difficult to clean, and finally could the hermits electrocute themselves by pinching the cord trying to climb up it?) But...that is me. I play it extra safe. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

No you're right, I guess I was hoping someone had some idea of how, but I know you're right.GotButterflies wrote:When people ask questions like this...I look at it from my perspective. Water fountain in crabitat
There are crabbers that have fountains in their crabitats...I just am not one for it
You could make a false bottom to help with the flooding issue- but I’ve seen a crabber have a crab dig down past that and they had to tear apart their crabitat to get to it.

Re: Water fountain in crabitat
I have had aquarium pumps in there that spill over a rock formation into a large pool. They enjoyed it, alot. Unless its a really strong pump - im talking moving 100's of gallons per hour - they wont get stuck. You have to just look for the right pump - aka. Stick with ones made for aquariums. What i have learnt is they love wires. That same pump was used as a way to get out, and one day a part of the wire that was submerged finally managed to be in contact with the water. A little smoke and fire was produced - scared me more than it scared them - and a little electricity was produced. Since that day ive learnt to cover all wires with airline tubing - slit it lengthwise and then push the wire in - so keep everything electrical safe.

Re: Water fountain in crabitat
I managed to for like two or three months, but they tracked so much sand in that the filters couldn't handle it and the motor was ruined.

I have 4 Straws, 6 Es, 2 Lilas, and 19 PPs. 3 PPs belong to another crabber on here that I am watching until she gets out of school this year. I used to have 4 Lilas, but 2 of them belonged to my friends, and they picked them up. They told me they are bringing me a couple of Ruggies the next time I see them.Sillysheep wrote:Gotbutterflies, What kind of crabs do you have and how many?

Wow. Thank you. I was telling my mom about you, we were wondering. Incredible! She says I'm her hero. That's what made me tell her about you. One year we went to Myrtle Beach, all she talked about was getting a hermit crab. When she got home, a friend of a friend had abandoned a crab and Mom rescued it. That was my "Biggun". She bought 4 more, and 3 died, she got upset and gave them to me...I was clueless. Anyway, she says I'm her hero because I haven't lost any yet. 3 of mine came home from Myrtle Beach the next year, that's the 5 i have now. 2 of the 3 that she lost were Es. I know now because I went back to look at their pics.GotButterflies wrote:I have 4 Straws, 6 Es, 2 Lilas, and 19 PPs. 3 PPs belong to another crabber on here that I am watching until she gets out of school this year.
