would this container work for small pools?

Post by mrm » Sat Nov 04, 2017 2:01 am

i have a 10 gallon tank and as much as id love to get my two crabs an even bigger one, i dont have the space for it. literally do not have the space :headshake:
anyways, i only have these two small dishes that were bought when my younger sister first got the crabs and i wanted to make them pools that would not take up toooo much room, but would still be an upgrade from what they have now, and would allow them to submerge at least a little, since i dont think they can do so at the moment

TLDR: would this be ok enough to turn into a pool? http://www.christmastreeshops.com/produ ... f1dBGhSw2w i figured id put some sort of net coming out of it on both sides to help the crabs get in and out instead of the fancy gradual rock "pathways" leading into the water ive seen since those would probably take up too much of the actual water area. it would also be easy enough to take out and clean
id love to hear what others have done in their 10gal!
thank you!

It should be fine. As long as its deep enough and they have easy to access exits, they be fine.

The one thing I would like to say about netting is it will wick water out of the pool onto your sub. I'm speaking from experience :) LOL!
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

I am about to upgrade pools for my two guys, So I have recently been thinking about this idea also. Especially a ramp for them to get in and out on.
I saw several pictures and descriptions of using plastic craft screen for a ramp. Not being familiar with crafts or needlepoint, I wasn't sure about this. I found it at my local craft store and its cheap. I want to make it look more natural so I also got some tiny natural craft shells that will be fixed to the screen. I have seen this in a few pics also, so my aim is to make a small shell lined ramp. It seems pretty simple; boil tiny shells, use pure silicone as adhesive, shape the mesh, affix shells, let it cure, and place it in. (at least I am hoping its that simple)
What did you do for a way in and out of the pools? Did you go with the plants?
Thanks

I used some large clam shells stacked on top of each other. (Smallest on top and biggest on the bottom.) They aren’t glued down, so I just scrub them with a nail brush when I clean the water dishes. It works for me.
