Safe netting
I've seen on here to be careful with netting because of chemicals. I purchased netting from Hobby Lobby and it had a strong diesel? odor. I emailed the company that made it. This is their response:
Our decorative net is genuine recycled net; it does not contain any chemical or residue.
Water is used during the cleaning process.
What do you think? I left it outside in the sun for about an hour thinking maybe it just needed to air out. But that didn't help.
I'm not crafty in the least bit so I can't make anything from hemp or whatever.
And what do you think about ceramic, glazed store bought dishes?

If it smells weird I wouldn't use it. Trust your nose!
Ceramic glazed pottery should be fine unless they are chipped

Thank you. Yeah, I returned it. As it turns out there's no room for the ceramic piece I got. Lol

Re: Safe netting
The recycled netting should smell like stinky ocean muck, not gasoline. Good call on returning it. If you ever try again, run it through the washing machine without soap to clean it, it holds a lot of silt and will smell a bit in the humidity of the tank.

Thanks. I wish I was crafty like most of you seem to be so I could make my own.wodesorel wrote:The recycled netting should smell like stinky ocean muck, not gasoline. Good call on returning it. Re: Safe netting
I cannot knit or crochet to save my life. (Cross stitch yes, but that is a whole nother set of skills that does nothing IRL.) The upside is that there are some serious crafty people who sell whatever one might be looking for, and buying supports their crabby habits so it's a win-win!

I tried again. I bought burlap net from walmart. Yes, it was made in china. It too had the smell of gasoline. I boiled it. I rinsed it. Let it dry in the sun. Still smelled. Then I put it through a hot wash cycle then the dryer. No luck getting the odor out.wodesorel wrote:The recycled netting should smell like stinky ocean muck, not gasoline. Good call on returning it. Re: Safe netting
I was able to pick up some fish netting from Michael's craft store. It smelled a little fishy, but not at all like diesel

Re: Safe netting
Well...the netting I purchased from CamillesChoice on Etsy ALSO HAS THAT ODOR. I just can't imagine putting that in the tank which is practically sealed. I don't know what to do.
