For what it's worth, I have come across a straw adoption in the last year: they do happen. You may have to be willing to drive a ways, and cast a wide net. Regular scouting of online buy & sells as well as crab groups like this one and those on Facebook are likely your best bet. Patience is a must. The only straws I've seen in pet stores were going for about CAD $ 40, and they really weren't in good shape. Id have expected all of them to be fatalities within a week or two. It was pretty depressing.
My point being that from a not-potentially-wasting-your-money perspective, an adoption may work out better. Crabs that have made the transition to captivity will likely be hardier.
