Best Hygrometer?

Post by piratetoothgir » Fri Feb 16, 2018 3:25 pm

What hygrometer should I use for my 55 gallon setup?
I want a good quality, and accurate brand. What type do you guys use?

You simply place a battery inside of it, and it works. I use command tape to place it inside of my crabitats. Some people make "cages" for theirs, either by using craft mesh or fishing net. You do not want to place this directly on the substrate.

This is what I use https://m.lowes.com/pd/AcuRite-Digital- ... gKNDfD_BwE

It’s a little more expensive than the one GB uses but I’ve had issues with that one getting too humid and not working (like the screen is unreadable). I made a post on it and some other people say that they’ve had the same thing but they just buy a new one every year. I should’ve saved money in the long run and just gotten the better one to start with.

Another great plus is that I keep the screen part on my night stand and it tells me my room humidity/temp and my tank humidity/ temp without me even having to move lol!

Just remember that whatever you buy, you should calibrate it regularly. Any hygrometer can fail without warning!

Well, is it water proof or resistant to water?
I mist my tank and it might get water droplets on it.

I found some ones that actually are sold by reptile brands, may go with those, but we'll see!

Like most products made for reptiles and crabs, they are usually overpriced and don't work well!

Purchased everything I needed last night, and the hygrometer too.
It's a ExoTerra ComboMeter digital gauge, so it has a probe for both functions.

It had good reviews, and it looks very similar to my current thermometers.

Here's my list that I ordered last night.

Fluker Red Coleus (2)
ZooMed Hammock 14 1/2 Inch (2)
ExoTerra Medium Ficus (2)
ExoTerra Digital Combination Therm/Hygro
ExoTerra Feeding Dish Small
Sequoia Bend-A-Branch Jungle Vine
Reptile Basic Ultratherm 47x11
Lee’s Kritter Keeper Medium (2)

I only ordered two of the ficus vines, but I think I will purchase some small mandarins from PetCo when I go.
I'll be heading to PetCo for the substrate, lots more EE for the tank. If I get bricks, I think I'll get two packs, and if it's loose, I will get three bags.

You get a lot more ee with the bricks. Of course it is more work for you, but it is cheaper and more for your money!

No, it’s much easier for me doing bricks! Then the dirt is evenly moistened, so I don’t have to mix water in the existing substrate and end up with a flood.

Why wouldn't you want an Accurite directly on the sub? I'm thinking about getting one, as mine seems to be inaccurate. (Plus, let's admit it. Accurites are cool. )

Forgive me if I’m wrong (I haven’t used an Accurite before) but I think it has to do with moisture getting inside of it and breaking it/making the screen unreadable. :)

Gotcha. I tend to get water on my gauges anyway, oops. :P Hmm. . . . I wonder how I could hang it. I really don't have much space on the tank walls, and what I do have, I'm hoping to make little second levels out of soap dishes for a shell shop and a chia garden. Maybe I could hang it from the lid.
