Hermit crab stays in hut

Post by suebrad » Sun Apr 29, 2018 10:44 pm

DJ goes in the hut more than usual (stays in for hours if not longer) and does not seem to eat that much lately. Sharky, his roommate, usually follows in after him. This behavior just started within the last couple of weeks. At times, it seems as if Shark is holding DJ hostage but that does not explain the loss of appetite. They are usually very active but DJ seems to be in a funk. Would appreciate any thoughts/recommendations...thx.

To be honest it is hard to tell. I took Shark out late last night for just about 15 minutes to give DJ some space and he ate a little. But then DJ went back in the hut and Shark went in shortly thereafter.
As of 1:12 pm they are both still in there. The hut is located where both entrances are opened so no one is ever trapped inside.

Sometimes hermit crabs just want some time to themselves. If DJ is moving around, it’s likely he’s still eating and drinking.

Otherwise, are the temperature and humidity within range? If you’re concerned your crab’s going into lethargy you could submit an emergency template in the Emergency forum.

Thank you for your input. DJ, for some reason, seems to be doing better. Out of frustration I took the hut out for a few hours after I posted and he and Shark started moving around and eating. I had just received a new stash of food from the Hermit Crab Patch and made one bowl each for them, along with water, etc. I eventually returned their hut and they went back in. The next day they came out and things seem to be getting back to normal. Don't get it and they keep me guessing at times so I will just wait and see what they have up their little claws next time.

Hermit crabs do spend most of their time hiding. In the wild they are at the bottom of the food chain! Everything is out to make a meal of them, especially birds during the day. It is very normal for crabs to stay hidden until they are ready to eat, especially when they are smaller, and they won't always eat every day.

I forgot to address the temp/humidity question. I constantly check the gauges and make adjustments as necessary. That didn't seem to be the problem at the time. They just like to keep me guessing. I have had these little guys for several years and because I have not witnessed this behavior before, I got a little concerned. Thanks for all the input...it helps.
