MY HERMIE WON'T SLEEP OR REST

Post by Mr. Crabs » Thu Jun 14, 2018 10:14 pm

My little crab is acting strange. This is my 7th crab so I'm pretty familiar with their normal behavior. Suddenly over a week ago my Mr. Crabs stopped curling up in his shell and resting. He is pooping more than he ever has, and dispite not curling up into his shell or sleeping, he hasn't been as active as normal. He is a quiet crab normally, but was chirping VERY loudly last night. Am I crazy? Something just doesn't seem right! Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else?

They oftentimes are sleeping when they are just sitting there. It's different than our type of sleep. I almost think its like they are in a trance. lol I just assume when mine sit still for hours on end they are sleeping. They don't have to curl up in their shell to sleep. As long as he isn't fighting with another crab, I wouldn't stress too much about the chirping. Crabs are weird.

So I shouldn't be concerned that he is also moving in slow motion and has been standing primarily in his food bowl for like 3 days?

It sounds like he may be gearing up for a molt soon, they will often eat more than usual in the weeks before they dig down. Also what Rawr said, Crabs are Weird

Guys, I'm not new at this. This isn't my first crab and I didn't get him yesterday.

If you would like advice about your set-up and whether there is anything that you could do to improve that might remedy the problem that is happening, please fill in the emergency template and we can give advice.

Hi, admin here. Other mods and members are offering you information based on experience and what they've learned through the forum.

None of us know everything there is about land hermit crabs and unless more updated and specific research is done any time soon, we probably won't.

Please don't be so dismissive of others trying to be helpful in good faith.

Not at all being dismissive. I just don't need basic information. I joined this just for him because I can't find information about how he is acting anywhere on the internet so I'm super desperate! He is a class pet and I didn't buy him. If he dies I have a lot of upset kids.
None of my other six crabs I used to have did this. And this is new behavior even for this crab. He used to almost always be curled up I his shell, and now he won't even do that. He just kind of hangs out.

Chirping can be a sign of distress. However...my es chirp a lot for no reason at all. (when I look - nothing is wrong - no one is messing with anyone, so for me, it is just them communicating or something..).

Hermit crabs can have back to back molts. This is not uncommon. Are minimum humidity and temperature requirements being met? Are you using the right kind of salt- marine salt? Do you have a minimum of 6" of substrate? What kinds of food are being fed? All of these questions are asked in the emergency template that is mentioned and linked above helps us to help you :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com
