Native shells vs. Turbos

Post by crabby33 » Tue Jun 26, 2018 12:47 pm

My smallest crab seems to prefer wearing shells native to his home range over turbos and I have lots of turbos. Tapestries, Banded, Jade, Green, Silvermouth, Gold mouth, and Pacific. Buckbeak is in a Fluctuosus and Timon is now wearing the Apple Murex. He wore a Gold mouth for a little bit. So my question is... why does Timon prefer shells native to his home range over Turbos?

If the shells are clean and the right size, it could just be personal preference.

Who needs the fancy exotics when you’ve got good things from home?

I agree. People tell me to offer turbos, and I do, but he doesn't like them.

What size shell are they in? PPs in up to an inch opening can be very experimental in their shell choices. Usually as they get older and bigger they settle into either Fluctuosus or Tapestry and stay with those two for life.

It could also be something is off with the shells, or they are the wrong size. I have had some beautiful turbos get passed over for 9 years straight with no obvious reasons why.

Buckbeak is in a fluctuosus with a 1 1/4" opening and Timon is in an apple murex with a 7/8" opening. I have tapestries and snake skins in the tank but they get passed over. I also have banded turbos too.

in the last week and a half, 2 of my guys finally swapped shells, and they also seemed to swap what shell style they like! my one E came ina painted whales eye, and swapped into the biggest carved turbo i could find, and i bought babylonia shells for them since its one the care sheet! haha. then my PP, who came in a babylonia painted shell, swapped to a good sized babylonia haha.

i figured the PP would go turbo, and E babylonia, but i cant complain, they got out of those bad shells either way! now to get the other 2 to actually swap.

The crabs have their own plans man. At this point I just put the shells in and nothing they choose surprises me. I have a big one that is checking out shells that are way too small. She looks at them all carefully, and inspects them and puts a leg or two in- but never changes because they are sooo tiny she would never be able to squeeze her but into before she will move on to the others more her size to look at. (I feel ya sister :hlol: )On the other hand, I've had others put on shells that seem ridiculously huge- Never mind that there are more than plenty of options for them!
