Zoea *successful captive breeding & rearing of C. variabilis
Re: Zoea *successful captive breeding & rearing of C. variab
Hi I was just wondering what the temperature and humidity was in your crabitat when your crabs displayed breeding behaviour. Also I was wondering how many crabs you had in your crabitat at the time they were breeding, also how many males and how many females did you have in the tank when they were breeding? Thanks Nat, like everyone else I'm inspired and want to give it a go too

Hi there, Not an answer from Natalie but I am another Aussie crabber. I had babies in Jan and managed to get 12 to land but they didn't survive their first moult. My tank sits at a pretty steady 28c with 80% humidity. I have 5 crabs in a 60x45x45cm tank. Don't know how many males and females but I do know I have at least 2 females and (obviously one of the others must be male) I didn't notice any breeding behaviour. Actually first sign I had was finding the zoea in the salt water pool. I have 2Litre pools of fresh and salt water both with airstones in them constantly. I use rainwater from our farm tank and natural ocean water I collect while scuba diving. I have had 2 of my crabs for 4 years (one female and one as yet unknown) and the other 3 were fairly new. It was one of the new crabs that deposited the eggs. BUT they had been in my care for about 4 months at the time. Hope this helps.
Crazy crab lady with 1 male raised in captivity who is now 7 yrs old (Dec 23) and a 2 females I've added from rehoming or adoptions to add to my breeding colony.

Hi all!
Sorry I have been MIA for such a long time. I'm slowly sorting my life out & have thankfully gotten on top of my health woes.
I haven't checked all of the comments I need to reply to yet, but will definitely make sure that I pop in more regularly from now on.
Happy Crabbing
