Installing CPU Fan

Post by piratetoothgir » Tue Jul 31, 2018 7:24 pm

I will be installing a small CPU fan in my tank once my molter comes up, and once my tank gets redecorated.
Yesterday, I was browsing the advertisements and saw kuza had his tank for sale a while back, and the fan he had made me want the same thing.
So, it's going to be a little fan covered in a craft mesh box, but I will mount it vertically onto the back of the tank using adhesive strips, and on the top.

Anyone else who would like to try this, feel free!
I will post pictures when I get the fan installed.

May I ask what this does? Circulates heat?

Its mostly to add an air current - some crabbers have noted the crabs enjoy sitting in the current. But yeah, it also does ensure there's an even temperature and humidity levels...

This was really popular back in the day, surprised to see this make a comeback!

Following. I considered this a while back but I’m just not crafty enough. I put a 5in plastic desk fan in my tank before with a dimmer and timer blowing air across the tank lengthwise. I had 1 crab at the time that really seemed to enjoy the breeze ! The others just liked to climb all over it. I would love to see pics once u have it set up!!

I got the fan, and it’s all rewired to a single cord instead of a little switchbox.

How do I need to take precautions to close it up to prevent crabbies from getting into it. I am making a plastic mesh cage for it, and using adhesive strips to attach it, but I am worried about everything else.

Does the humidity in the tank matter?
My dad said it’ll explode if I get water into the actual motor, so I want to make this thing protected.

I’ll start making the cage.

Thanks! I really want to get it installed, but it has to wait until fall when I redecorate :(

That's one of my downfalls. I'm so impatient when it comes to adding something new that I am in and out of the tank too much. My crabs don't seem to mind, but I am definitely ready to finish up everything so I can just be in and out for feedings and nothing else!

If its to protect the wires, electrical tape to seal them off from the humidity and then wrapped in airline tubing cut lengthways should suffice.

I came to that thread to ask about how to prevent the crabs from going in and being hit by the blades, to see it was already answered ; thanks! I'll try to install something along those lines in my crabitat. What size of tank do you recommend for something with current? I don't want to create a sea storm in a tank that'd be too small.

A small CPU fan wont do much, but no point in putting a large fan in a small tank (get a mini CPU fan)... could easily add one to a 10g if you want.
