Edit: Also, is there any hamster wheels I can get that already have the mesh or something? I'm not crafty at all, lol, and probably would end up breaking the hamster wheel

I don't think they make any wheels with the mesh since the wheels are marketed toward small fuzzy critters. But if I can do it, I promise you can too lol! I measured the inside of my wheel with measuring tape first. Then I cut the mesh to that size. I connected the 2 ends of the mesh with cotton yarn to make a circle. Then I popped it in the wheel.Crabby7Crabber wrote:Also, is there any hamster wheels I can get that already have the mesh or something? Would this one be okay for a ten gallon? Do you think it would rust? (thanks for the vote of confidence!CrabbyLover77 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 1:31 pmI don't think they make any wheels with the mesh since the wheels are marketed toward small fuzzy critters. The rust probably wouldn't be an issue, but the way that wheel is built makes it not crabby safe. The bars that cross over each other could cause little legs to get caught if the wheel is in motion (and another crab is next to it). You're best off getting a silent spinner wheel like this:Crabby7Crabber wrote: Would this one be okay for a ten gallon? Do you think it would rust? Anything else I would need to install the whell? I'd like to get it on the side of the tap, and I want them to be able to crawl on it... mesh? what brand? Should I boil everything when I get it?CrabbyLover77 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 1:50 pmThe rust probably wouldn't be an issue, but the way that wheel is built makes it not crabby safe. I'd go with the smallest size for a 10 gal. I also bought the silent spinner, 4.5", for my 20 gal L. My big crab Beau can fit and use the wheel, but my small-med guys fit better. I'd say once you upgrade your tank you can upgrade your wheel. I plan on keeping my small wheel for my small guys when I upgrade to my 55 gal, and buying a larger spinner for Beau.

You can set the wheel right on top of the substrate if you want. I decided to hang mine upside down using command hooks. Just look up "craft mesh" on Amazon and you'll see they come in all colors:Crabby7Crabber wrote: Anything else I would need to install the whell? Such a smart idea! Thanks for the mesh link!CrabbyLover77 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 2:44 pmYou can set the wheel right on top of the substrate if you want. I decided to hang mine upside down using command hooks. Just look up "craft mesh" on Amazon and you'll see they come in all colors:

I just gave my stuff a soak in warm water and vinegar for 20 mins or so, then rinsed well and dried.

You're welcome! Just a heads up, craft mesh is usually a lot cheaper in craft stores than online. I know AC Moore is going out of business, but I got like 20 sheets there for under .70/sheet (it was on sale). When it wasn't on sale it was appx .80/sheet. I believe it is sold at Michael's too, but some members on here said their Michael's stopped carrying it.Crabby7Crabber wrote: Such a smart idea! Thanks for the mesh link!
Haha! I found some command strips, too! Yay!CrabbyLover77 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 3:22 pmYou're welcome! Just a heads up, craft mesh is usually a lot cheaper in craft stores than online. Haha yeah, they like to eat in there too! To get the crabs to start using the wheel in the beginning, I would put little treats in there every night to lure them in. I also have cotton yarn sewed in around the mesh about every inch to help my smaller crabbies grab onto something and move the wheel. You don't have to do that but it helps my smaller guys out.
Who doesn't like to eat while they exercise??? LOL

I went to Walmart and bought the hamster wheel and the coconut hut (its for birds) the wheel was about $4 and the coconut hut was about $9 and my crabs love hiding in it!Crabby7Crabber wrote:Awesome! Looks amazing! Where did you get the coconut from? And the second story? I want to get something like that from Amazon!
Awesome!Crabby7Crabber wrote: Haha! I found some command strips, too! Yay!
I've never seen food in there. But there is poop.Crabby7Crabber wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 2:55 pmAlso, do they eat in there or something? It looks like it's a spot where they bring food to eat, lol! Eat some food and then burn the calories!
I love the coco hut too! I've seen those in the birdy section. I'd like to get one after I upgrade my tank. And wow, you got your wheel cheap, that's awesome!Julsie wrote: I went to Walmart and bought the hamster wheel and the coconut hut (its for birds) the wheel was about $4 and the coconut hut was about $9 and my crabs love hiding in it!

I've found popcorn residue in my wheel. That's the treat I put in there in the beginning to lure them in. I guess now they associate the wheel with having a good midnight popcorn snack lol.Hermiesguardian wrote: I've never seen food in there. But there is poop.
