Rescued Crabs

Post by Julsie » Tue Feb 11, 2020 2:09 pm

Hi y’all i’m not new to this forum but I wanna say that I “rescued” 2 new crabs from horrible conditions. These 2 big guys were kept with about 8 others their size in a 10 gallon with no lid and 2 “hiding spots”. The 10 gallon had that bad “hermit crab sand” that’s no good for them and it wasn’t even an inch! I was told by someone that this Livestock & Feed Store had hermit crabs and I was intrigued. I’ve never heard of a livestock and feed store keeping hermit crabs. So I visited and my heart instantly dropped. They were kept in another building that was ice cold (it’s about 40 degrees here in Texas right now). The crabs didn’t even have a heat pad on the tank for them at least. So I reached in and held all of them and chose 2. Took them up to the front counter and told them i’d like to purchase these guys and also gave them a big speech about how they should take better care of the crabs or they shouldn’t even have them. I told them the sand was bad for them, that they should get a lid with saran wrap at least and good grief a HEATER! The clerk packaged them up in a box and I got in my car and started crying. I told the clerk if I could i’d save them all because their conditions were absolutely ridiculous. I know we shouldn’t buy from stores and that we should rescue but if I had taken pictures of their conditions I think some of you would understand. Anyways as soon as I got home I dipped them into the pools and sat them down and they instantly came out of to say hello and started exploring, climbing, and checking out all the shells. My other crabs even introduced themselves. Image

One of the new guys already changed shells but he chose one too small for him lol. I have other shells his size which he will look through and choose hopefully.
