Just bought a 75 gallon!

Post by Julsie » Fri Feb 21, 2020 4:22 pm

Image so excited to be upgrading the hermies from a 40 gal to a 75 gal. One question though if my 40 gal is 6inch substrate how much more substrate bags should I get to make the 75 gal 6inch?

According to online calculator you’ll need 300 lbs or (.111 cubic yards) of sand for a 6 inch depth.

Do you have the online calculator website? I'm going to be upgrading to a 55 gallon tank and need to know how many 50 lb bags of sand I'll need. Thanks!

300 would be 6 bags. That doesn’t sound like enough. ???

I'm not sure, because I'm no expert, but awesome set up! They'll love it for sure!

I upgraded to a 55 as well. It should be about 4 bags of 50lb playsand for 6 inches straight up.

I think i used 3 bags and 2 bricks of EE, but now i want to make it 8 inches 😕

6 should be right on the money (ish). But you should totally add a couple bricks of EE as well to add a bit more depth while you have the chance. It’d be a royal pain to add/mix later on if you change your mind after the crabs are burrowed in.

Although not necessary ofc. I’ve tried all EE, all playsand, and partially mixed/partially separate. They’ve by far preferred the mixed imo.

O wait.. it’s already been set up Image Looks nice Image
I’m opting to use half of the hood leds on my 55g at a time, although they havent been proven safe or unsafe as far as i could tell

I average one 50 pound bag for every 10 gallons of a tank. When you start getting into larger tanks like 55 and up the estimate ends up getting a bit off. Like everyone said 6 bags should work out. I always like to have an extra bag of sand laying around for emergencies.
