New crabs !

Yah I know what that’s like. When I was with the pet store with my mom she’s like see they don’t have tons of sand in their tank ( she thinks I’ve got too much) then I had to explain to her that they don’t use enough because they would never find them.

Just opened my bag of instant ocean up and dumped it in my storage bin. Going to mix up a batch tomorrow. I’ve got a recipe figured out. I used the package and my hermit crab book to figure it out and I’ve got a hydrometer to check it.

Ok, I think I figured out Instant Ocean. I dechlorinated using 2 drops of prime into a 700mL water bottle then added 1 teaspoon of instant ocean. It looks like it fully dissolved. No idea if it has the right specific gravity because I cant figure out the hydrometer. Does anyone know a good brand of refractometer that is easy to use, works really well, measures specific gravity and not insanely expensive?

My refractometer from Imagitarium works well but I don't remember how much I paid for it. Right now Petco has it listed for thirty-four USD.

Can't do Petco since you need USA mailing address. My family does have a USA mail box (we're in Canada) for companies that require USA mailing address. But, no one in my family is making trip down there anytime soon--especially with coronavirus and the border being closed.

Any of the ones on Amazon good?

Bashful has been molting under the sub since March 17 or early in the morning of March 18. Happy buried under the substrate on March 31. Of course he digs down under the saltwater dish. Both water dishes were last changed on March 29. Food was last replaced on that day as well. I do not feed fresh food- I only feed pellets & freeze dried:
-Zilla Fruit Mix
-Zilla Omnivore Mix
-Zilla Small Animal.
-Fluker Mealworms
-Fluker Grasshopper
-ZooMed Red shrimp
-Fluker crickets
-Fluker soldier worms
-Fluker river shrimp.
-purebites dog beef liver
-ZooMed hermit crab fruit salad
-ZooMed hermit crab crunches
-calcium supplement
And the food items I ordered came over the course of the week- they are:
-Zoo Med Flower Topper (tortoise)
-purebites cat ocean white fish
-2 more bottles of fruit salad and crunches
-Fluker interactive treat in strawberry and blueberry

For the most part, I think you're good. But I would avoid the Zoo Med Crunchies if it were me. My crabs never liked them in the short time I had it and they have a lot of chemicals in them. My crabs enjoy just plain peanut butter much more, but this is just my crabs' preference. But other than that, you seem good! Make sure to check out the link below for more commercial food warnings, though!

To be fair, most of those chemicals are vitamin and mineral supplements. It’s up to you whether you feel the need to include them or not.
