Dead crabs

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?

Ecoearth about 5 inches

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?

Temp is 75 humidity is 80 located in back of cage

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?

None

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?

Currently freash only using aqua safe

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?

Pluckers bearded dragon food

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?

Pp for about 3-4 months

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?

Once a few weeks ago

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?

10 gall mesh lid, glass terrarium

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?

3 tinies

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?

7-10

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?

No

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?

Weekly spot cleaning and wipe down with wet paper towel


13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?

No

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?

No

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

No

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.

I went into my room today to see an empty shell on the ground in a corner and open closer looking I saw a Shelless crab on the groun motionless without any of its frond pinchers. One other crab was up when I looked. How can I tell if a crab it dead and what should I do with the possible aggressor. Thanks.

Put it in an iso tank and if you don’t smell anything bad it may be alive

He smelled like a dead fish and was all curled up in a ball should I still try

Well if he smells bad then it probably isn’t alive but you could still try putting him in iso tank and waiting overnight! I am crossing my fingers for you

Ok I made a small ico take for him with his shell honey and water with an ecoearth substrate. It’s not much but it’s all I have for now. What are some signs I should look for to pull the plug or keep on pushing? Thanks for your help!

Um... there are some serious problems with your tank, I'm surprised that no one has pointed it out yet.
1: Sub should be at least 6" all around.
4: CRABS NEED FRESH AND SALT WATER AT ALL TIMES! This is extremely important and you will need to fix this right away.
5: Bearded Dragon food for a crab? I've never heard of that, but even if it is safe you should still be feeding fresh food as well along with supplements such as calcium or protein.
My best guess to why this happened is the lack of saltwater. You need to re-shell the crab and put the food right next to him so he doesn't have to move to get to it. Do the same with the water. This crab needs salt water if he will live so you need to get him some ASAP.

If your hermit crab is laying on the ground and doesn’t react to being touched it is most likely dead.
