Test Run: Garlic?
I decided to try something new with my crabs. I found a few papers on feeding garlic to shrimp with positive results all around, including greater survival and feed conversion ratios in shrimp with garlic supplements than the controls. At the very least they demonstrate that garlic isn’t as toxic to crustaceans as we thought based on our knowledge of insects.
I did have multiple crabs check it out, though how much they ate (if at all) is hard to say.

Wow, I would really love to know the results! If they like the garlic, that’s great news because I think me and other crabbers have lots of garlic laying around. LOL!

I wouldn't give it to my crabs. If I ever have any doubt at all, I refrain. I would never test on my crabs, or any animal.

Re: Test Run: Garlic?
Maybe, but I honestly doubt that they would enjoy eating garlic, not because it's bad for them but because raw garlic by itself tastes absolutely disgusting. I may try cooking it for them, though.asiankanye wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 7:33 pmWow, I would really love to know the results! Re: Test Run: Garlic?
A fair point, but hermit crabs aren't dogs. Even using insects for comparison is iffy because of how different they are. What affects an insect won't necessarily affect a crustacean the same way, and vice versa.
Re: Test Run: Garlic?
I've only had hermit crabs for 20 years. They are not white shrimp. And I don't speak any other languages other than English. I only speak from experience. Right on Joe! I love all the references! Good job!

Hermit crabs don't have red blood cells, that requires iron-based blood. Hermits have hemocyanin, which is copper-based. They can't even get anaemic.
Garlic in marine invertebrates is highly recommended - including in marine hermit crabs. I'm honestly surprised as a community we haven't embraced it, but then we all tend to be terrified of everything.

Garlic. The whole tank would stink.
Bleh.
That is all I have to say.

Re: Test Run: Garlic?
It's used in marine and freshwater systems as a natural dewormer, probably the info you found for the shrimp?

Re: Test Run: Garlic?
The studies I looked at were measuring survival and growth to judge garlic as an animal feed in aquaculture. They referenced studies finding better appetite and growth in fish but I don’t think they mentioned deworming.

Re: Test Run: Garlic?
Mine have had many the roasted chicken and turkey wing tips that had been marinated in onion and garlic. To me, it was never a risk to them, but it also never seemed worth the fight to mention here. I never thought the crabs would show interest in the ingredients by themselves!
