Going away for a week

Post by xambackwards » Thu Aug 27, 2020 6:30 pm

Hi! I will be gone for six days on vacation at the cottage. I have a 15 gallon tank with a 10 gallon topper and two pps, I am not sure what to do. I have heat pads rather than heat lamps so the humidity stays 80-90 perfect with spraying once every two days (half and half ee/play sand keeps humidity) and temp is always 80-85. Is it okay to leave my crabs for this long if I give them some dried fruits/veggies and food that won’t go bad? I can leave the heat pads on when I leave. My only issue is when I recently got my new crab him and my crab i’ve had for 4 years we’re fighting and chirping, eventually my old crab switched shells and my new crab took his old shell they haven’t fought since and sleep in the coco hut together. Will they possibly kill eachother while i’m gone? I ordered 10 shells from naples that are all good sizes for them but i am leaving in three days and I don’t think they will be here by then :(

( I have 3+ extra shells for each of them aswell as a lot that are a little too small/they don’t like)

Lastly I could make a temporary ten gallon set up out of my topper and bring them to the beach (2hr drive) and leave them in the cottage with their heat pads and bring some fruits and everything they need.

I don’t know what to do, I don’t really have anyone to watch them as my girlfriend is terrified of them and I don’t really trust anyone else to take care of them while i’m gone (without wanting to constantly play with them / dig them up or do something dumb)

Thanks for any suggestions!

If your crabs have been getting along for a while, I would not hesitate to leave them. I leave my crabs for a week about 4 times a year. I fill up the water dishes, and leave lots of dried food. The food is always moldy when I get back, but that's okay.

I agree with curly, I've left mine for a week at a time before with no problems. just leave out a good variety of dried foods.

Whenever you get a new crab, they will have to establish the "chain of command" in the tank. If they are getting along well now, there shouldn't be any issues.

Just leave plenty of leaves, seed, snake skin, dried seaweed, calcium, dried bugs, etc for food :) Fresh water with air stones help too :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com
