Glass Top?
I am going to get or make a glass top and I have two questions:
1. Should I make the glass top or get it from a store? I have a simple 20 gallon long, and I am not trying to have it be a special size or anything, but is it cheaper to just DIY?
2. Since my crabs are "large", will my crabs just push it open the lid and escape or will it be too heavy for them?
Thanks!

Re: Glass Top?
I also have a 20 gallon long and I have a glass top. The one I got from Petco is on sale for $12.49. It works great and I highly recommend it. Just dont do what I did and stick the handle on the wrong side of the glass. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostor ... m-top-20-lHermieBingo wrote:I am going to get or make a glass top and I have two questions:

It'll be cheaper and easier to just get one of those hinged glass tops like aqueon makes. Just find the size for your tank and drop it on. Normally only like $15
If you tried to make it, just the sheet of glass would be $10 or more plus if they have to cut to size plus if you want the edges deburred so you don't get cut. Wouldn't be surprised to see places charge $30 or more.
Unless you just are burning for a DIY project. A glass lid is easier and cheaper to just buy.
20L is a standard size too so it shouldn't be bad.
Edit didn't see the second question.
Yeah they can push mine open, but I just put a couple pounds of decoration on top and now they can't. Someone on here uses those stretchy lock deals they make to baby proof cabinets.

Re: Glass Top?
I keep a jar of peanut butter and a jar of coconut oil on each lid of my 55 gal. That has my largest crab in there. On my 20 gal, I have a container of rocks and a large rock on the lid. I haven't had anyone escape...yet lol.

Re: Glass Top?
Ok. I think I am going to buy a glass top, not make one.
Enson, I actually use some baby lock cabinet thingies on my crabitat right now to secure my screen lid (don't worry I figured out ways to get good humidity). So, good thing i now know my hermies are strong and can lift a heavyish glass lid lol
Thanks everyone for your input!

Re: Glass Top?
Um, one more question I came across:
Doesn't a glass lid make it so that the hermit crabs can't breathe?

Hermit Crabs breathe with modified gills. The glass holds in the humidity allows them to breathe with their gillsHermieBingo wrote:Um, one more question I came across:

they will be perfectly fineHermieBingo wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 8:44 amUm, one more question I came across:

especially when you have the lid open to do things like with food and water (or spraying if you do that)
when u have to lid open it will kinda like circulate the air in the tank
so it’s not like the tank is completely sealed off and never opened or anything

Re: Glass Top?
They have both gills and rudimentary lungs. Oxygen and fresh air is needed, but they also need some humidity to keep their breathing organs moist enough. 70% and above is absolutely safe, so a glass lid isn't a must but it can be handy.

Re: Glass Top?
They won't suffocate from lack of oxygen if that's what you are asking. There are enough gaps around the glass and lid that allow a flow of oxygen yet still keep heat and humidity in. Plus every time you open the lid or if you have a bubbler you pull fresh air from the room into your crabitat.
