Hello Wlfwo,

I hate our water! There are times it smells like rotten eggs! That don’t happen to often though thank goodness! I need to get the stuff so I can make them some pools. I have salt mix that should be here tomorrow or the next day. Ordered it off Amazon. I’ve been looking at Pinterest for some ideas to put in my tank to help with having stuff to climb on. I just posted a picture of my tank. It looks empty. I also need to get more shells to put in there but think I’ll go to hobby lobby or Michaels craft stores. Might even look online on their website to see if I can order them and have them shipped. Less time in the store that way.

I so nervous when I haven’t seen them move around. Patrick is under the log and has been there for a few days now. I did at least lift the log to make sure he was okay and he is! Jengles and SpongeBob were out and about this morning. I’m really hoping that Patrick and Squid changes shells soon. When I got them from Petco they were in painted shells. And not sure how they did it but Patrick’s shells has a unicorn on it. It sticks up off his shell too. That worries me. I remember reading some where that the painted shells aren’t good or safe for them. I had read you should give them a bath once a week. So when I got my tank I bought AquaSafe from Walmart. It neutralizes chlorine and chloramines. For a 16.9 oz bottle of water how many drops should I use! I also drink purified water I probably won’t use that because it has calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate in it.

Thank you for all your help! It is greatly appreciated. Not sure but will try posting a pic of my tank. I have so much work to do in it. I think they also don’t move around that much because I don’t have much for them to climb on. Everything is setting on top of the sand. Image

Just from looking at the picture do I need more sand in my tank? I’ve seen so many picture with the sand much deeper than I have mine. If I should I do have a bag that I can use but it won’t go across the whole tank! I will need to get another brick of soil to add to it.

Hi there!

You're right, the painted shells aren't good for them. I've done a lot of rescues the past couple of years, and most of them came in painted shells. The trick to getting them to change quickly is having the right size shell and preferred opening shape. You most likely have a purple pincher, and they prefer shells with round openings. Here is the shell guide to help you out:

http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 24&t=92552

Don't go digging for any crabs, but if you can, grab the measurements of the shell opening for those hanging around on top. For example, say your crab has a shell with a 1" opening. I like to get a couple of shells a bit smaller (7/8"), a couple of shells the same size (1"), and a couple of shells a bit bigger (1 1/8, 1 1/4). This way they can size up or down if they want too (or stay the same). As soon as they change shells, I throw away the painted one. A great place to get good hermit shells online is Naples. I've ordered from them a few times and my crabs always like their shells:

http://naplesseashellcompany.com/hermit ... hells.html

AquaSafe will work for your well water. If you ever move and have public water, you would need a dechlorinator that also removes ammonia (like Prime). If you use a 16.9 oz bottle, 2-3 drops should do the trick. Personally, I like to keep a gallon of treated fresh water on hand and a half gallon of salt water. I use those to fill my smaller bottles as needed.

For your tank, you'll want to have at least 6" of sand castle consistency substrate, or sub that is 3x the height of your largest crabby, whichever is deeper. It allows for plenty of molting room. If you have any crabs that aren't on top, you can't dig for them. Instead, you can add 1" of substrate per day, just don't pack it down. Also, don't move any large buried objects. Just place the sub around them. This will ensure any tunnels dug stay intact.

If you can find room, try getting them a silent spinner hamster wheel. My guys love to go for a walk in theirs! You can place it on the sand, or hang it upsidedown with command hooks. Egg crate (or light diffuser), placed on the back and/or sides is great for climbing. You can find that in the lighting section of hardware stores (Lowe's, Home Depot). Usually I place it where I want it to go, and then fill the tank up with sand. The weight of the sand holds the egg crate in place against the walls. If all your crabbies are on top and not buried, you can do this too. I have my hamster wheels attached upsidedown to the crate.

Also be sure to have pools that the crabs can fully submerge in, with easy access in and out (I use craft mesh zip tied on my pools like ramps).

I hope this helps and that I didn't ramble too much lol! Image

Hey Crabby,

No, thank you for all the information. It’s funny I was just sitting here going through posts and looking for answers to questions I’ve been thinking about. And you posted all the answers I was searching for!

Was just telling my bf that I think I need more sand in my tank and discussing how I should go about adding more and if I could add to what is already in there. Yes I need to get more different sizes of shells. I have some in there but think the few I do have might be to big. Now SpongeBob and Jengles just changed into new shells. I was so surprised how fast they did and I missed it! Yeah I don’t plan to move anytime soon! Been lucky to be in the same place for the last 14 years.

One question I do have is should I stick to the fluckers sand I already have in there or is it best to use a mix like play sand and soil mix?

I know I probably will have more questions if I don’t find the answers in the forums first. Love this website, it has been so helpful.

Hi DL,

You're welcome! Glad I could help with some of your questions. I love this forum too. It's helped me to dramatically improve the lives of my crabbies since I joined in 2019.

When you add more sand, I'd just go with play sand. It's so much cheaper and you get a lot of it. Usually, I can get a 50 lb bag for under $5. I keep a small container in my pet room with extra sand so it's close by when I need to top off the tanks.

Hey Crabby,

What do I need to look for when getting the play sand? We have a Tractor Supply store here in town. I want to make sure I’m getting the right stuff and not something I’m not supposed to use and hurt my babies.

Should I use eco-earth or the bricks of soil to mix in with it? Yeah I don’t think they have made any tunnels cause my sand isn’t deep enough. And I don’t have to remove any of the things I have in there. Just place the sand around it or should I remove the stuff that is on top when I add new? Probably be smarter and remove stuff so I’m not burying their stuff! They have been moving around in there. Patrick was out and about and squid before I went to bed. I noticed this morning that Patrick and squid have changed sleeping spots...lol...jengles and spongebob were out and about yesterday. Jengles was actually in the small bowl I have in there with moss in it. I changed that last night with fresh moss cause the other one I had in there lost the green looked it had when I first put it in. Not sure if I am supposed to that but it looked awful.

My salt mix will be here today so I will be making them a salt water today. I’m sure they will like that. I’m hoping anyway. I need to change their food out today too! I got a soap holder with suction cups on it yesterday that I’m going to put in there. I’ve got to get to a craft store to get some mesh canvas so I can make ladders for them to crawl on. So many things I would love to do but not sure how. I have an imagine my head but to put it in my tank is another thing. I will get it figured out sooner or later. My main concern right now is getting more sand in there for them.

DL

As long as it's play sand, it'll work. My tractor supply carries it. I have never heard of bricks of dirt. Eco is coconut. Oh yeah, take the stuff out, they'll bury it over time. I'm pretty sure I have more shells buried than there is on top.

Hey DL,

Glad to hear your little guys are active and enjoying the moss pit! I keep a little bit of moss in my tank too. It's ok if it dries out a bit and you want to leave it in there. My guys like to shred it when it gets dry lol.

Here is the play sand I normally buy:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Quikrete-50 ... /206363630

Just make sure whatever you get is good for sand boxes. Play sand will be "washed and screened" so there's no big pieces/pebbles in it.

The big bricks are actually just compressed eco earth, so it's totally up to you want you'd like to use. I use lose EE but a lot of people like the bricks. When you mix up your EE and sand, you can use your dechlor fresh or salt water. Make sure to squeeze it after you mix it. It should hold it's shape, but not be dripping wet.

If you don't have any guys buried and/or molting, you can remove all the decor and add all of the new mix on top.

I found my craft mesh at AC Moore before they closed. If you can't find any at craft stores, WalMart also sells the white sheets in their craft area.

Check out the "Pictures" board on here. I got a lot of my ideas for my tank from other people's pics.

Thank you both..

I will look at each place and see who is the cheapest! With the EE if using do you use dry or do you get it wet like the soil? I am making sure that I do it correctly so I don’t hurt my crabs. I want to make sure that they have the right mix and I don’t get it to wet when adding the new sand. Also, I have some sand that I gathered from the beach when I was in South Carolina. Can I add that to my tank or would it harmful to them. I hope I can cause that’s what I shed when I brought SpongeBob and Jengles home. The guy did tell me not to use the wet sand which now I don’t understand why when they need it like that. I got this bag of moss at Petco, but I am not sure how to use it. I did some research on it but could not find anything on how. Does it go in dry or wet! I got it to use in the dish I plan to suction cup to the side and make a ladder for them to climb to it. Thanks for the help! I will have to look at the pictures and get ideas. I’m excited about putting more in my tank. It looks so boring right now.

I wet my spagnum moss, just to damp. Dunk it in treated water, squeeze the excess out, stick it in there. Now if your humidity is too high, you can put it in dry and it will help with that a little. I get my spagnum moss at Lowes in the flower dept. Just make sure it is 100% spagnum moss and not treated with anything.

Wlfwo,

Remarkable where you can get some of this stuff. It amazes me! My humidity runs between 75 and 85..if it gets to high I have a small corner of my Saran Wrap cut so I can slightly move the towel I have on there to let it breath then I put the towel back over once it has come down to normal range. For the most part since putting the Saran Wrap over my lid my humidity has stayed where it is suppose to and my heat. I’m thankful for all the help I have received from everyone here. It has helped out a lot.

Now my jengles is missing this morning

You're welcome.

When I mix my sub, I do the 5:1 ratio of dry sand and dry EE. Then I mix it all up. Then I wet everything and mix it again. Some people use just straight sand, or straight EE, but I think the majority of us use the mix. It seems easier to maintain (for me anyway).
It's safer not to use beach sand, just because we don't know what pollutants it has been exposed to. Don't worry that you brought them home in it, since that was only temporary. You just don't want to fill their current crabitat with it.
Unfortunately, many pet stores and their employees don't have good info to give when it comes to caring for hermies. It usually all about making the sale.
I do the same thing with my moss that Wlfwo does. And don't worry about the humidity being too high, the crabbies don't mind. My humidity is always in the 90s in both tanks. It may cause mold on food or decor to grow a little faster though.

Happy Saturday!
