Calcium

Post by HermitCrabCHICA » Sat Jun 26, 2021 6:16 pm

I made this topic to ask about calcium for hermit crabs. :) I know this is very important to them. I am trying to make a homemade calcium mix but can't figure out what to put in it. :| So far I have crushed eggshell in the mix. Are orange peels a good source of calcium for hermit crabs? :?: Please give me some tips of what I can put in my calcium mix that I have laying around home. Thankyou! :cheer:

Egg shells are great. Another thing they love, next time you are shopping at a pet store, is a plain cuttlebone (they sell them for parrots). I don't think orange peels are recommended.

Bloodworms, mealworms, and bugs of various sorts are also great sources of chitin, which is another important nutrient for crabs. If your family ever eats shrimp, you can save some of the shrimp peelings and tail (rinse off any spices) and give it to them; that is a great source of chitin, also.

Is there anything that I can find laying around the house that is rich in calcium?

Chicken grit, made from crushed coral and oyster shell. Super cheap and I've even seen it at our Walmart. (Granted, bit of a country girl here.)
