I'd recommend removing the pellets but looks good otherwise!HermitCrabCHICA wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 10:01 amMy homemade hermit crab food mix: chunks of orange peel, crushed almonds, crushed eggshell, alfalfa, dried shrimp, dried mealworms, hermit crab food pellets, and love . Hermit Crab food mash:
Ingredients: egg shells, pumpkin seeds, pecans, water
Mix in a blender and vary consistently until it is like chunky potato mash. Serve to crabs! Mine love it!
Keep in fridge.
Sometimes I add new ingredients too...

Uh oh! My food mix got moldy so I had to throw it out. :'( I am making a new one hoping it doesn't mold! I will make this one without the pellets and orange peel.

Because of the humidity any food you put in will mold and you will have to change it out in 24-48 hours. Even if it is completely dry it’ll mold sooner or later.HermitCrabCHICA wrote:Uh oh! Then how would you suggest food be stored so that it does not mold?Hermielover121 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 03, 2021 9:09 pmBecause of the humidity any food you put in will mold and you will have to change it out in 24-48 hours. Even if it is completely dry it’ll mold sooner or later.

Oh sorry there was a misunderstanding, I thought she was talking about how it went moldy in there enclosure. Of course if the food is dried in an air tight container it should not mold.

If you mix up something wet for them, you should only make a very little bit to put in with them. I suppose you could make more and freeze it, and then just thaw little bits at a time to give them.
I don't usually go to that much trouble, though; I just put in a rotating variety of things. I keep a shell with mineral supplement (all the time), a shell with worm castings (almost all the time), and a cuttlebone and some bark and various leaves in there all the time.
Then they have three little shells that all have something different in them, randomly placed out around the tank to encourage them to move more. I take out the oldest of the three food shells and put in something new every evening, so each food shell sits in there for about 3 days before it gets rotated out. Right now there's a shell with freeze dried mysis shrimp, a shell with a dab of organic peanut butter, and a shell with Crabtastic Foods Tropical Smoothie mix (that one was put in three days ago, so it will come out tonight and something else go in). If I eat something that is good for them to have I'll just put a bit of that in that evening. I have some fresh pineapple today so I might put a little bit of that in tonight.
