Smallest loves to dig

Post by smolmuffin » Sun Sep 12, 2021 6:59 am

I've had my crabs for a couple of days now. The smallest of the bunch, who is an adorable bluish gray has been digging all around. Its made a tunnel or two to chill for a bit. Might be preparing to molt or even just destressing but its been my most active and curious crab yet.

That's great that he's active! Are they eating well? What are you using for a setup?

I too just began (I hope) properly in the hobby a week or two ago with 3 tiny pet store bought hermies in a 29gal setup my 9yr old son wanted to do with my help Who am I to say no. Was going to do a 10gal I had on hand. Actually had several 10gal laying around with tops and lights, but of course had to go bigger per the recommendations I've researched LOL.

I opted for the PPS method so I've only got an inch or so of substrate to prevent them from digging and going under. I've been offering them healing foods. One is active enough that he comes out to eat during the day. The other two hide under a chunk of moss most of the time. There is signs they are cruising all over at night though. Sorry to hijack your thread! Just comparing notes.
Two 29gals. 3 PPs in each.
~200gal of fish tanks. Mostly planted community tanks.
Multiple kiddos, doggies and kitties.

The reason the HCA does not recommend the PPDS method is because it has not been shown to increase survival rates. If a crab has to molt, it has to molt. It is better to have the crab in proper conditions, with deep enough substrate to molt underground.

That makes total sense. Other sources I've read suggest you need to get them as healthy as possible before they molt because molting is so taxing on them. So confusing.

Currently have a 10 gal and I do plan on upgrading as soon as I can. Once I get paid in a few days I will get them a second heater since I am struggling with maintaining anything higher than 75 (will get 77-80 closer to the heater) and they are hanging out by the heater to sleep. They do explore the tank at times. They've been loving the water pools and the coconut hide. Unsure about eating habits and I need to work on getting them more fresh stuff. its been mostly crushed cuttlebone, dried shrimp and whatever safe veggies I can find for them.
