Escapee

Post by Arkos » Sat Sep 25, 2021 12:23 am

I’m deeply saddened to say I’m fairly sure my jumbo leviathan escaped last night. As he’s not in any of the hides and none of the ground looks disturbed. I’ve put honey and a soaked paper towel out in my room after I searched for him. I’m very distressed and I’m at a loss. Not sure if you guys have any advice besides what’s in the sticky. Mostly just needed to vent to people that get how awful it is to quite literally lose a crab.

Well i stayed up extra late since I know crabs are nocturnal. Finally at 3 am I found him after he fell off my shoe rack and made a loud crash. Seems he’s survived that 2 foot fall and about a 4-5 foot fall from the tank to the hardwood. I’ve managed to get a hold of some large glass that was used for store shelving. I will be cutting a new glass top tomorrow that fits the top of the tank perfectly to eliminate any cracks around the perimeter so this NEVER happens again. I don’t think I’ve ever been so stressed in my entire life.

Glad you found him fast! I have a wanderer that gets out every few months, but I know she can't get into trouble. Once they find a weak spot they tend to keep going back to try and exploit it, so keep an eye on him.

Wow, Arkos I really felt for your panic as I often let my crab ramble in the house for exercise and I fret about losing track of her - what you described was like a worst nightmare. I'm so glad it turned out!! And indeed, I've had that experience that a loud noise often gives them away when they are embarking on some misadventure. Your experience was a good lesson on keeping the tank sealed but also, offers hope for those in search of a lost crab.

The little buggers are crafty, that’s for sure. A lot hardier than I expected too lol
