How do you do it?

Post by Jlmills525 » Tue Sep 28, 2021 10:50 am

This is my first hermie.. i've been scouring the forums regarding care, habitats, behavior etc...

I THINK he's gone under to molt.. and it's only been a few days... but HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE UNCERTAINTY?!?L

LOL

My husband calls me Elmira because I'm so obsessed with my pets... I keep sniffing his tank for any sign of fish odor.. gaaaahhhh!

This was so hard!! My first hermit molted for MONTHS as his first molt (he was fairly big when we got him) and frankly I still don’t know how to not worry XD. Keep hanging in there though, and remember that this is natural! They know what they’re doing :) (well complications could arise but usually it’s totally fine!!) Good luck to you and your crabbie hehe

I don't know the details of your setup and substrate but if that's all good, that's half the battle!

I hear you though on keeping the faith. I've got two 29gal setups going. Each with 3 small hermies. All 6 seem to be down as I've had zero signs of activity for days. Even prior to that, I'd only see 2 of them active.
Two 29gals. 3 PPs in each.
~200gal of fish tanks. Mostly planted community tanks.
Multiple kiddos, doggies and kitties.

I have 4 teenies that are all down molting so I feel you. I feel like as tiny as they are, they should have been back back now. It’s been a month and no smell or anything, so I just have to wait and know they are doing what they naturally do. It is tough though.

I think molts are more stressful on us than the crabs. Not really but it sure seems that way! We always worry when we don't see a crab for a while. We look at it now like we have you everything you need, proper conditions, waters, balanced diet, enrichment, the rest is up to you little dude!

Glad to see your guy came back up!

Joe's meme sums it up fairly well.
