How adorable! Really appreciate the updates, it gives me hope that some day captive bred crabs will be a accessible option in the pet trade.

Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing your experience here. I just started learning about what it takes to properly care for hermit crabs after failing miserably at it many many years ago as a kid in the 1980s. The captive breeding process blows my mind! So grateful you do what you do.
Two 29gals. 3 PPs in each.
~200gal of fish tanks. Mostly planted community tanks.
Multiple kiddos, doggies and kitties.

OK babies from early this year are now 5-7months old. Size ranges from 11.11mm opening with a leg span of 32mm to3.10mm opening with a leg span of 16mm

BUT between 1 and 2:30 am this morning (2nd November) I had a female spawn more zoea. Today I transferred 431 zoea from my salt pool to my raising set up. Salinity 1.026, Temperature 27c. Let's see how many of these make it to land.
It's getting pretty crowded in my crab tanks at the moment.
Crazy crab lady with 1 male raised in captivity who is now 7 yrs old (Dec 23) and a 2 females I've added from rehoming or adoptions to add to my breeding colony.

Disaster today the jar that had the highest number of zoea in it broke and some ended up in the fresh water but the rest in the jar got inundated with fresh water as well. Possibly have about 50 out of 500 that might survive. The other 2 jars are doing ok. Mega tomorrow in the first jar ( I hope) Image

These were from a spawning the following night and it was almost double the size of the first one. So gutted to have lost them.

I am so sorry that happened, I hope they will spawn again for you. I know it doesn’t replace all of your hard work, they are such little miracles the captive bred babies, but hopefully you’ll have a lot of baby hermits. We’re rooting for you, sending lots of love.

Thanks I still have the 400 or so from the evening before’s spawning. They are looking good and should move to mega tomorrow.
I’m sure I’ll get another go.

Did a BIG water change in jar 1. Then discovered that the new salt water had not had the filter or heater on in the bucket. Salinity is down to 1.020 instead of 1.026 Water is whitish which indicated to me that the salt hadn't dissolved which is why I checked salinity. Turned the pump and heater on and will leave the other 2 jars a little while before doing water changes. Jar 2 which now has half of the first spawning (same as jar 1) is looking good. Water is quite clear with some suspended particles but lots of swimming zoea. Jar 3 with the survivors of the disaster has about 4 zoea swimming around. If I get any to land out of this attempt I'll be happy. :anon:

The first spawning seem so be doing really well so that’s good. On day 6 I had only lost 13 out of 432 so I was really surprised. This morning they were mid shed to mega. A day later than normal but water temp has been 27c instead of 28 so that is likely the reason for the delay.
